December 11/12 18:18 pm - 2012 CC Awards Voting Off to Strong Start

It has been just over 24 hours since we opened the voting for the 2012 Canadian Cyclist of the Year awards, and already we are well ahead of the pace for last year's voting. This early in the voting, no one has a strong enough lead to get a lock on a win so, if you haven't voted yet, it's time to do so!

In the voting for the top woman, the lead has already changed a few times, but currently Mountain Bike World Cup champion Catharine Pendrel holds a slight lead over road racer Clara Hughes. The Paralympic gold medal tandem of Robbi Weldon and Lyne Bessette are sitting in third, in a virtual tie with road racer Joelle Numainville.

Giro d'Italia winner Ryder Hesjedal, as many expected, has taken the lead in the men's voting, but it is not a rout by any means. Both Hugo Houle, fourth in the U23 Worlds road race, and Olympic mountain biker Geoff Kabush held early leads, and are still in contention.

In the Individual Performance category, Hesjedal's sixth place in the final stage of the Giro leads the voting, but Weldon and Bessette (Paralympic gold medal), and the Olympic bronze medal Team Pursuit squad are right behind. Others still in strong contention are Steve Smith's first-ever Canadian Downhill World Cup win and Zach Bell's silver medal in the Omnium at the Track Worlds.

The new Canadian Cyclist Bike Shops of the Year category has proven to be very popular. Already, we have votes for shops in 8 out of 10 provinces, plus the Yukon! (We know there have to be some great shops in Manitoba and Newfoundland, as well...)
