December 16/19 12:04 pm - 2019 Canadian Cyclist Best Bike Shops - The Winners

Posted by Editoress on 12/16/19

We are pleased to announce the winners in our eighth annual search for the Best Shops in Canada, as chosen by you, the readers of Canadian Cyclist. Thousands of votes were cast from all across Canada.

We have gone through the ballots and broken them down by region to determine the 2019 Canadian Cyclist Best Bike Shops. Thirty one (31) shops from across the country have been selected, and they will each receive a certificate identifying them as the local bike shops most respected by their customers.

Twenty four (24) shops repeated as winners. The two shops that won in the previous seven years - The Cyclery in Ottawa and Pedalhead Road Works in Edmonton - are on our list again, making them the only eight-time winners.

Nearly 200 shops received nominations, with many shops tweeting about the competition, or including a link to it in their newsletters and Facebook pages.

Two things shone through for all of the top ranked stores: customer service and passion for cycling. [Note: There were also numerous mentions of great coffee...]

Congratulations to all our winners.

Here are the 2019 Canadian Cyclist Best Bike Shops. We have included a quote from a voter for each shop.

Atlantic Region

Cycle Solutions - Corner Brook, Newfoundland They know everything I don't!!! I am new to biking, and my boy loves mountain biking. They have formed a kids mountain biking group - so parents like me do not have to stress that their child is out in the woods alone. They help you choose the right bike - and are honest without showing you the most expensive options only. They teach you and share with you their considerable knowledge and have even pumped tires when you don't know how. Because of this store, my town has become more active (they are a nordic ski shop as well), they are huge about community and have built amazing trails and support many local ride groups and races. Corner Brook is a healthier, more active place to be because of Cycle Solutions!

Mike's Bike Shop - Dieppe, New Brunswick Service amazing.. prices great ..and the staff go above and beyond ..they also support local youth biking groups for many areas of this province.

My Bike Shop - Moncton, New Brunswick Nobody can match the service and personality of Jim, the owner. I've followed him to each shop he worked in over more than 20 years and am proud to support the shop he now owns.

Bikes & Beans - Quispamis/St John, New Brunswick They are just the best; friendly service, great mechanics, they teach me how to look after my bike, fantastic community support, and good coffee. I go there when I don't even need anything!

Velofix Nova Scotia - Halifax, Nova Scotia Great value, wide selection of services, over the top customer service. And last but not least - super convenient. They come to your house!

Hub Cycle - Truro, Nova Scotia The staff are so amazing, Bruce and Rod look after you like no business, and if you take your wife or girl friend in there, Daisy will take care of the girls like they are the queen of the shop. They host all kinds of rides, snow shoe events, ski events and other stuff for the community. They get people out, get them active and love what they do. An absolutely amazing place to go shopping or to go to an event with.

Quebec - Greater Montréal Region (GMR)

Cyclosphere - Mirabel Friendly owners and passionate about cycling. Lot of products and they know their products. They organise rides with customers every week and they contribute in time and money for building trails.

Momentum Velo - Montréal Best mechanics and sellers I have ever seen. The sellers prefer that you have a bike suited for your needs [rather] than selling you the most expensive stuff.

Quebéc - West

Centre du Vélo La Shop - Gatineau I have been a long term client of Centre Vélo LaShop since 2009. This year, they celebrated their 10th year anniversary. Over time, Centre Vélo LaShop grew from a small bike shop to quite a large bike shop. Even through this change they stayed friendly, client focus, close to their communities. The owners, Pat and Jo put in in countless number of hours to make this place the best client experience as possible. Centre Vélo LaShop has an amazing community footprint by sponsoring local athletes (XTERRA), participating in local demos: such as Vélo Mont St-Marie, Kanata Lake Trails, Camp Fortune, and many more. All this to say that my vote goes to Centre Vélo La Shop as the best bike shop.

Polo Velo - Gatineau They actually help people; they're not just in business to make money. I had accidentally over blown the tire on my stroller, the gentleman fixed it free of charge.

Ontario - Greater Toronto Area (GTA)

D'Ornellas Bike Shop - Scarborough Not only is their store awesome but they support many local events and races. Owner of Amazon doesn't pump your tires before a race but the owner of D'Ornellas does!

Evolution Cycles - Richmond Hill Well any bike store will sell you parts & bikes. Mine gave me new trainer while mine was being fixed. Pushed my car 2 blocks when I ran out of gas & drove me to get gas. Has never let me down when bike broke down, got me fixed up in 10 min or less :)

Via Ciclante - Mississauga They're the best in the business - knowledge, service, passion. They have the best bike fitter in North America, JP Tesolin - they are excited about bikes AND it's their 40th year anniversary!

Gears Canary - Toronto Have been a customer there several years. A friend was going to buy a bike and asked me for advice. I sent them to Gears Canary as I expected them to get the same service as I usually get. And he came home with a bike that he was very happy with and fitted his need perfectly. And he was also very happy with the guidance he got, they were able to explain things so he on his level could understand and make wise decisions.

Ontario - East

The Cyclery - Ottawa They are a cyclist's bike store. Almost always have what you're looking for in stock, and are happy to order for you when they don't. Helped me to get a bike that no other store in town could find. Great supporters of the local community, from running the local CX series, to helping organize Crits, to sponsoring a woman's team. Friendly, professional, passionate.

Velofix Ottawa - Ottawa Velofix (Adam) not only fixes my 3 bikes in my driveway, he shows me what I can do to improve the performance of my bike and simple ways to maintain it. Velofix is also a huge supporter (they provide bike service support) at just about all of our local races and Fondos. When I have a repair emergency Adam always finds a way to find the time to sort out my bike. He gives me great advice on other cycling related stuff - advice on power meters (I got one this year) and training. In essence - Adam is amazing!

Ontario - North

Algoma Bicycle Company - Sault Ste Marie It's like Cheers for cyclists; a social spot to chat with the regulars...including the postman; and staff goes above and beyond. Also carry great and trusted brands.

Parry Sound Bikes - Parry Sound Amazing people that create a family atmosphere, great product, quick and reliable service, super cool location in an old fire house, everything you need bike! Oh and great coffee and the cutest shop pup! What's not to love? I live 7 hours away from this bike shop and it is still my favourite. I will always be a customer and recommend this place!

Ontario - Southwest

Forks Bicycle Shop - Owen Sound (formerly Erin) The shop is new the area and we couldn't be happier. Brian is a breath of fresh air to our community, giving exceptional service and a huge selection. I can see why he's got so many 5 star reviews, and now I'm one of them!

County Cycle - Beamsville They sell & support Canadian products. Their customer service is top notch. The product knowledge is amazing and keeps you up to date with the latest products. They stand behind their products . Also, love their YouTube channel with their tutorials on their new products with their "unboxing" series.

Infinity Cycle - Windsor This is emotional to type. I started this year off at 420lbs [and] I needed to make a change and I bought a bike from Costco but had problems with it and brought to other shops and felt like they took advantage of me because of my inexperience and weight. The guys at Infinity Cycle are so open to help and have helped me so much and I've lost 55lbs. Super blessed to have them in our city.

Manitoba/Saskatchewan

Woodcock Cycle Works - Winnipeg, Manitoba The group at Woodcock is the best. They know their stuff since everyone there are greatly invested in biking whether that's from leading group rides, competing in cycling races or just having fun with them. Great to learn more from them every time I go in.

Dutch Cycle - Regina, Saskatchewan It's an institution for cycling in Regina. Owned and operated by same family forever. Excellent sales, service and selection and they know you by name.

Alberta

BikeBike - Calgary Sean and Nadia run a beautiful family-friendly bike shop. I feel welcome in their space. They support local cycling advocacy work, host fun events and Nadia even bakes fresh cookies. We are lucky to have a shop like this in Calgary.

Bike Bros. - Cochrane Graham, Andrea and staff have created an amazing community hub that is welcome to all types of cyclists in our town. There is no attitude here. Graham and Andrea are behind the newly formed Bike Cochrane Society that advocates for cycling in our community. They are the driving force behind the development of Cochrane's first pump track and future cycling facilities in town. We are so lucky to have their passion and commitment! Not only do they work hard to improve cycling in Cochrane, they also have a surprisingly large selection of bikes, gear and some of the best service technicians in the Calgary area. Nothing but love for Bike Bros!

Bicycle Repair Hub - Calgary Andy goes beyond just what the repair is needed. He sees ways to help, doesn't always charge if it's a small thing, collects free bikes to repair and give away and is very active in his community. Oh, did I mention it's a mobile shop, he comes to you!

Hardcore Bikes - Edmonton I like that this is a family run shop where everyone that works there knows what they are talking about and stands behind what they sell. It's an old-school shop experience in the best way possible.

Pedalhead Road Works - Edmonton In a world where internet deals slam you in the face every time you open a device, Guri and his wonderful staff demonstrate that 'Your Local Bike Shop' really means something personal to their clients. I'll take their brand of individual riding style over 'one click fits all' every single time. Saluti!!

British Columbia

Bicicletta Vancouver - Vancouver Dedication to the sport, grassroots support of local and national events. Incredible shop and service experience and the staff are super friendly and very helpful.

The Bike Barn - Penticton Unreal customer service. Great banter. Support local community events.

Trail Bikes - Courtenay Great service, active sponsorship of local riders and trail maintenance, quality merchandise at good prices.
