March 10/20 15:55 pm - UCI Publishes Olympic Track Quotas

Posted by Editor on 03/10/20

The UCI has published the nation quotas for the track events at the Olympics. Canada will get spots for all but three events, although may not participate in every event.

Canada has qualified for the following events:

Women - 7 athletes total
Sprint - 2 riders
Keirin - 2 riders
Team Pursuit - 4 riders
Omnium - 1 rider
Madison - team of 2 riders

Men - 6 athletes total
Sprint - 2 riders
Keirin - 2 riders
Team Pursuit - 4 riders
Madison - team of 2 riders

Canada does not qualify for the women's Team Sprint, despite winning the Continental Championships, winning the Milton World Cup, and finishing fifth at the Worlds. The reason is that we did not gain any ranking points until the most recent few races, when we had the squad of Lauriane Genest and Kelsey Mitchell start competing. So, Mexico, which as been competing consistently through the entire qualifying period gets the spot. We did not get a men's Team Sprint spot either (but we hadn't been competing in the event).

As previously noted [see Canadian Olympic Track Quota Looking Clearer], Canada does not get a spot in the men's Omnium due to Continental quotas and South Africa bumping us.

We get spots in both women's and men's Madison because of our endurance quota - riders have to come from the Team Pursuit (and, in the case of women, Omnium) quotas.
