February 2/06 1:29 am - New Jersey Update, 2006 BC Cup Series Gets New Sponsor

New National Jersey

Yesterday the CCA and Louis Garneau unveiled a new design for the jersey worn by members of the national team when they are competing for Canada. Click on the image to see a larger version of the new design.

We also put up a survey so that our readers could register their opinions on the new design. Currently, the voting is running 70% in favour of the new design. Click here to take survey.

A former member of the national team, Dave Cook, has also shared his thoughts on competing for canada in the old jersey:

There was something very special about the jerseys worn by the national teams in the 80's into the early 90's (blue body with white sleeves - maple leafs on the shoulders and back). Steve Bauer's ride at the 1984 Olympics is what made me want to race bikes - Although I didn't stat racing until 1987, I fell in love with the sport and held a simple dream of racing in that Jersey.

My first race in that jersey was in 1989 at Superweek - a group of young team pursuit riders, one of which is still the most dominate road sprinter in North America. We took so much pride in riding in those jerseys and it was all for the same reason - the image of Bauer at the 84 Olympics. When the Jersey changed in 91', blue arms instead of white, it was a simple but acceptable change. The jersey has changed a few times since and the last one I wore in 1994 in Victoria - but not having the blue in there seems wrong - there is a certain identity in that blue and Canadian cycling. It is like the yellow with alpine skiing ... it isn't a Canadian colour, but it is a colour identified with Canadians at the top of that sport.

However, the graphics on the jersey changes doesn't really matter, but there needs to be some blue in there.

FloraGLO Lutein Title Sponsor of Cycling BC's 2006 BC Cup Series

The 2006 BC Cup Series, Western Canada's top amateur road cycling series, will have FloraGLO Lutein as its new title sponsor when the seven-race series gets underway in Pitt Meadows on April 9th.

Allan Prazsky, Technical Director of Cycling BC, British Columbia's provincial governing body of competitive cycling, joined Steve Hanson of Surrey-based Alliance Principle Ingredients (API) in making the announcement today. API distributes FloraGLO Lutein to vitamin and food manufacturers throughout Canada.

The BC Cup Series is a high-performance cycling championship which awards points to the top 15 racers at seven races around BC. The 2006 BC Cup champions will be the male and female rider with the most points accumulated over the course of the season.

"Having FloraGLO Lutein support the BC Cup Series is fantastic," said Prazsky. "Thanks to the tremendous success of BC's Superweek and standout BC Cup events in Langley, Pitt Meadows, Kelowna and Victoria, our Series is steadily gaining exposure and prestige each year. Attracting an international sponsor like FloraGLO Lutein certainly reflects that growth and national exposure."

One of the world's leading lutein brands, FlorGLO Lutein is used in multi-vitamins and dietary supplements around the world. Lutein is a carotenoid (natural pigment) found in dark green leafy vegetables. It's a powerful antioxidant that's used to fight the effects of harmful free radicals and benefit eye and skin health.

"We are pleased to be on board with Cycling BC and secure the title sponsor position of the BC Cup Series," said Hanson. "The BC Cup Series provides FloraGLO Lutein with an excellent platform to showcase its benefits to both athletes as well as cycling enthusiasts."

As part of its sponsorship, racers and cycling enthusiasts at each of the Series events will get to sample REFRESH Thirst Quencher, a hydration drink containing FloraGLO Lutein.
