Road World's Start Today

Today, the Road World Championships begin in Valkenberg, Holland with the Junior Women's and Under 23 Men's Individual Time Trials. Canada has one rider in each category - Geneviève Jeanson in Junior Women and Pascal Choquette in the Under 23 Men. Results will be posted as soon as they are available.

This year's Ontario Personal Best 15 km individual time trial final was notable for several things: a super-fast course up at Holland Marsh, a goodly turn-out of 39 starters, near perfect weather, except for a rising north-east wind and ∑. A Canadian best-ever junior time - done by a cadet!

D'Ornellas phenomenon, Peter Mazur, who earlier this year won the Polish junior road championship with a solo 2 minute break, showed what stuff he's made of by posting a remarkable 19-45 for the distance while proud father Mirek Mazur looked on. He rode on a standard Trek road bike with clip-ons and deep rim wheels.

Runner-up Darko Ficko, now riding for Newmarket, and third place Jet Fueller Heath Cockburn, both tricked out with special frames, wheels and helmets, could only come within 15 and 18 seconds respectively of the flying cadet, with both doing personal best times in the process. In fact, the event was very aptly named, with almost half the field doing their best times at the distance and the top 13 riders under 22 minutes. There was good representation from most categories, the largest groups being senior 3 (10), senior 1 (8) and vet B (8). Unfortunately, there was little representation from the under 18's with only 2 cadets and NO juniors.

The course was originally measured and certified correct by Dennis Dixon in 1992 and was re-measured last week by organizer, Peter McCaffery in anticipation of a national best-ever time. (that's STILL a record as far as I'm concerned). Timing of the event was done by Peter who is a UCI official and Al Norley who is a national commissaire. Thanks to Kit McCaffery for doing registration and marshalling at the turn, Doug Pogue for assisting with recording and to Henrick Sojhacki who did a sterling job of holding.
