October 10/98 11:02 am - Ziliute Takes Women's Road Title, Jackson 7th

Road World's - Elite Women's Road Race, 103 km

A series of early attacks and breaks meant nothing in the end, as the selection of top favourites came towards the end of lap 5 (of 6) when eventual winner Diana Ziliute of Lithuania attacked. Once things sorted themselves out, it was Ziliute, ITT winner Leontien van Morseel (Ned), Hanka Kupfernagel (Ger), Edita Pucinskaite (Lit), Allessandra Cappellotto (Ita), Svitlana Hihilyeva (Ukr), Linda Jackson (Can), Gunn-Rita Dahle (Nor), Jeannie Longo-Ciprella (Fra) and Anna Wilson (Aus). The group came apart a couple of times, with Jackson, Wilson and Dahle losing contact on the climb, however, as the leaders slowed for the sprint, Jackson and Dahle regained contact. Longo led out the sprint before being passed by everyone in the group.

1. Diana Ziliute (Lit) 2:35:33
2. Leontien Van Moorsel (Ned)
3. Hanka Kupfernagel (Ger)
4. Edita Pucinskaite (Lit)
5. Allessandra Cappellotto (Ita)
6. Svitlana Hihilyeva (Ukr)
7. Linda Jackson (Can)
8. Gunn-Rita Dahle (Nor)
9. Jeannie Longo-Ciprella (Fra) all s.t.
10. Anna Wilson (Aus) at 0:46

Background on Peter Reid

From Han Loeffelholz we have some interesting background on Peter Reid, the recent winner of the Hawaii Ironman Championship:

Peter was the 1987 Junior Ontario Provincial Road Champion. He was also a member of the provincial team at the Tour of Abitibi that same year. I just wanted to point out that he always showed a lot of promise and talent. Even when he was a road racer. So it was nice to see that you put his amazing result in your daily news.
