Gastown's Cobblestone Streets Get Set to Entertain the Entire Family at the 26th Annual Tour de Gastown

Activities and events for all ages planned for the annual race day on July 19th

Race day in downtown Vancouver is fast approaching and that means fun for the whole family! The 26th annual running of the Tour de Gastown begins with a thrilling 1.2 km race through the district's historic cobblestone streets, where over 180 elite racers will compete for over $15,000 dollars in prize money on July 19th, 2006. The course has plenty of viewing opportunities for thousands of fans, both big and small, to catch their favourite racers in action.

Throughout race day there will be a host of activities for both cycling enthusiasts and those just looking for a little excitement. The popular Bike Festival takes place on Water Street and includes a number of fun-filled interactive activities for families:

• The rousing BMX Stunt Show features a "Big Air" show where pro riders jump over 20 feet in the air and perform breath-taking aerial tricks
• The incredible Baia Brothers are on tap to perform feats of balance on their bikes riding across a 3/16th inch cable
• An inflatable Junior Survival Obstacle Course beckons kids of all ages to test their survival mettle
• Creative kids will enjoy the Kids Bike Decorating Challenge, where they can vie for prizes and get a free professional safety check and tune-up
• Kids can bring their bikes to the ultimate Bike Safety Rodeo-a great way for young riders to get a fun and safe start to their biking experience

Prior to the race, fans can also visit Team Alley and get the chance to meet the riders in person and see how they prepare for the big race. And don't forget to check out Expo Lane where everyone can enjoy games, a food fair, and much more.

Funds raised at The Tour de Gastown will be donated to the BC Cancer Foundation in combination with other events hosted by the Wedgewood Cycling Team. Last year the organization raised over $100,000 for the foundation.

The Tour de Gastown is part of BC Superweek, the richest week of racing in Canada that attracts top riders from North America. This year the week begins with the Tour de White Rock with races on Saturday, July 15th, through July 17th. The Tour de Gastown kicks off on July 19th and the Tour de Delta will complete the week with three days of racing ending on Friday, July 21st.

The day schedule for the Tour de Gastown on July 19, 2006 is:

• 1:00pm-5:00pm - Bike Festival events
