Clara Hughes Second in Bobbie Rosenfeld Voting

Former Canadian cycling star Clara Hughes finished second to speedskating teammate Cindy Klassen in voting for the Bobbie Rosenfeld award for 2006. The Canadian Press award for the top Canadian female athlete of the year is voted upon by Canadian Press and top newspaper sportswriters and editors. (Editor's Note: each year we are requested by CP to provide the names of any Canadian cyclists that should be nominated; this year we submitted Marie-Helene Premont's name)

Klassen, who won five medals at the Torino Olympics, was the overwhelming favourite, taking 131 of 144 first-place ballots and 412 points, to Hughes' 104 points (with three first-place votes). Olympic hockey gold medalist Hayley Wickenheiser had five first-place votes and finished third with 83 points.

Hughes and Klassen are also up for the Globe and Mail newspaper Nationbuilder award, which will be announced this Saturday.
