MIDWEEK CLUB WEDNESDAY NIGHT CRITERIUMS

RACER SPORTIF, LA BICICLETTA, SCHWINN, AL LAGO RISTORANTE

EVENT # 12 DATE: June 30th. 1999
DISTANCE: 48.4 KM 22 LAPS Av. Sp.: 45.3 KPH
WEATHER: Overcast, sunny periods, 22 C. Slight SE breeze

The race was to have been over 60 km but the organizer and the riders agreed that, with CHIN Picnic event tomorrow, it should be shortened. There were a couple of early break attempts but none succeeded until the decisive move with 10 laps to go, when Jef Hansen, Don Zuck and Greg Cavanagh pulled away and steadily increased their lead by 5 seconds per lap until the 18th lap. Then they took a whopping 30 seconds in the next lap.

With one to go, they were a minute and a half up on the bunch, with Mike Ybanez very effectively blocking for Cavanagh. In the final lap, the bunch started to chase in earnest but it was too little, too late and the lead trio finished 49 seconds up with Cavanagh comfortably out sprinting Hansen and Zuck rolling in third

Kevin Speacht who had won the majority of the primes, showed that he still had a kick left by powering ahead of the bunch to take fourth

Several riders who had upgraded from the novice series showed they had learned and developed well by finishing in the bunch

Thanks to Gino Greco (yes, the Gino Greco who raced so well in the early 80‚s) for helping with lap scoring and splits

PLEASE NOTE: NEXT WEEK‚S EVENT IS THE THIRD IN THE PRETIGE SERIES AND MEDALS WILL BE AWARDED FOR THE TOP THREE FINISHERS
