Final preparations are underway for West Coast Racing’s 2009 edition of the Cardiac Classic, presented by North Shore Bike Shop and Hansen Industries, host to the B.C. provincial XC championships on Sunday, June 28th. Visit www.westcoastracing.ca/cardiac for a link to online registration, event schedule, and other information.

Final early bird pre-reg discount has been held over for an extra 2 days, ending on Tuesday night, June 24th. All registration fees go up $10 afterwards, but even then the event is a great value with a huge cache of podium and draw prizes contributed by local metal machining outfit Hansen Industries (www.hanind.com) and North Shore Bike Shop (www.northshorebikeshop.com), who have both returned for a second year as primary sponsors of the Cardiac Classic. The pro/elite prize purses are courtesy of Hansen Industries, while North Shore Bike Shop has thrown in no less than 2 complete race bikes (GT Zaskar and Jamis Dakota) plus loads of other goodies. Chances of participants getting lucky enough to walk away with swag are through the roof with Race Face (www.raceface.com), Ryders Eyewear (www.ryderseyewear.com), Schwalbe Tires (www.schwalbetires.com) and ATAC Sportswear (www.bikeatac.com) also pitching in to the haul with many fine product prizes.

Matt Juhasz, owner of North Shore Bike Shop in the shadow of the famed trails of similar name, explained the virtual treasure trove stating that “I just want the event to reflect my shop, in that it’s all about bending over backwards to make sure everyone has a good time and knows we simply appreciate them stopping by.”

M&M Meats will be providing BBQ on site with burgers for a toonie each, to make it a day worthy of bringing the whole family out, with a full slate of kids’ races also for competitive youngsters on the championship course, or the free non-competitive events (free registration on site on race day) featuring the Trail Blaster youth event’s smaller layout and the special Micro event for the littl’uns, with parental assistance allowed.

One-day licenses are available for $10 for riders who do not have a current Citizen or UCI race license, or $5 for U17 riders. Non-competitive kids’ events require waiver only, with no fee for one-day license.

Revisions to the course will not only bring the racers in closer contact with the spectators at many viewpoints during the race, but will also serve as a deserving test to crown B.C.’s provincial champions. The centrepiece main singletrack descent twisting several hundred vertical feet down the mountain has been matched with a new route up a singletrack climb that will reward technical skills as much as fitness.

The course is already pre-marked for riding, with black arrows on a white background at all intersections, many posted 10-12 feet above ground level on trees and posts. Print off the course map on the event web site www.westcoastracing.ca/cardiac just in case!

West Coast Racing is a community cycling club operating as a not-for-profit society run entirely by volunteers from within its membership. In addition to hosting several events, West Coast Racing’s own member activities include outdoor and indoor cycling programs year-round for mountain bikers, road riders, and cyclocrossers including group rides, training programs, bike fits, skills clinics and fitness assessments.
