Kokanee Crankworx Kicks Off Saturday August 8 With Dual Slalom Race; The Block Party; And Bike Expo, Demo And Tech Zones

The Block Party will feature premiere of “Kranked – Revolve” as community bash launches biggest mountain bike festival in the world

Kokanee Crankworx 2009 is ready to rip Saturday, August 8 and will kick off the celebration of all two-wheeled addictions as the Bike Expo, Demo and Tech Zones open to the public in the morning and the Dual Slalom racers go head to head in the afternoon.

On Saturday night The Block Party will get the party started at 8:30pm with a free, family-friendly, community-wide bash.  “Kranked-Revolve,” by Radical Films, touted as the cinematic state of the union for mountain biking by Singletrack Mountain Bike Magazine, will play on massive screens while spectators can win prizes and hobnob with Kokanee Crankworx athletes.

“We wanted to kick off Kokanee Crankworx in a big way and The Block Party was the way to do it,” says Jeremy Roche, General Manager for Kokanee Crankworx.  “We’re calling on all the riders and everyone in Whistler stoked for Kokanee Crankworx to help us kick off our sixth year in style. This free community event will take place in Skier’s Plaza and will get everyone primed for nine days of the most ground-breaking, mountain bike festival on the planet.”

The Garibaldi Lift Company (GLC) will carry a live indoor feed of “Kranked-Revolve” and a Kokanee party will roll into the night for the 19+ age set with a full evening of live entertainment featuring Whistler’s own DJ Mr. Fister on the decks keeping things cranked.

The first athlete event of Kokanee Crankworx is the Dual Slalom, with time trials beginning on Saturday at 11:30am. The elimination format will see the Amateur Finals begin at 3:30pm followed by Pro Finals at 6pm.  With a new course flowing beside the Boneyard, this event is spectator friendly and will showcase high-speed race action on a flowy track riddled with jumps, berms and bumps.

The Bike Expo also launches its residency at the heart of Kokanee Crankworx as it snakes through Whistler Village August 8-16. The Demo and Tech Zones will be conveniently located in sections of Lots 1 and 2, across from the Pan Pacific Hotel.  Test drive top downhill, freeride and cross country bikes and components in the Demo Zone and be sure to check out the Tech Zone to check out sponsored riders as they chill out at their team trailers, and get their bikes tuned up and tweaked before their competitions. Oakley’s Rolling O Lab will also be on the scene, testing the science behind their ground-breaking technology.
