September 2/09 17:49 pm - Former Cycling Champion Rides for a Cause

Posted by Editoress on 09/2/09

Former National Champion Cyclist Vince Hartmann of Maple Ridge BC is rediscovering his cycling legs as he tours across Canada raising awareness of addiction issues and the need for more treatment centers in all areas.

As a teenager, Vince would hang around after school at the local cycle shop, Wentings Cycle where he soon discovered an outlet for his energy, doing club rides leading to local races and eventually winning a National Team Time Trial Championship in Ft. Mc Murray in 1989.

In his 20's Vince pursued a career in Insurance and Investments, which took away the time from the bike and led to a party-hardy lifestyle. Soon the bike was forgotten and only the drugs and booze remained.

Vince's addictions eventually cost him his career, his relationships and contact with his 4 year-old son is withheld.

Now 38 years old, he was able to conquer the addictions that were running his life and after a year of sobriety, he began looking for a way to spread the message that with proper encouragement and support, addiction can be beaten. He decided that the bicycle that was his freedom as a youngster would be the vehicle for his journey across Canada to spread the message of hope for recovering addicts and those affected by addictions. He left Mission BC for Victoria on July 30th during a record heat wave and is now in Regina Saskatchewan. One of his goals is to establish February 3rd as a “National Day of Sobriety” where we may reflect on issues surrounding addiction issues.
