Ontario DH Finals September 21/22 at Calabogie Peaks

Calabogie Peaks Resort Inc. will play host to the Bonham & Co. Downhill Finals on September 21 & 22, 2002 (two separate races). This is a replacement event for the Blue Mountain Downhill Weekend that was cancelled by Blue Mountain. We are excited about the opportunity to work with this fantastic resort and add another top quality downhill event to Ontario's schedule.

Obviously this will be the Ontario Cup Final for downhill racing in Ontario and some tentative info is already posted on our website at www.chicoracing.com/downhillevents.htm. Martin Gilbert conserve son titre de Champion des Mardis cyclistes de Lachine

(Lachine, le 13 août 2002) - La 25e édition des Mardis cyclistes de Lachine a pris fin ce soir par la tenue de la 10e et dernière étape. Martin Gilbert a remporté la course, suivi de très près par Yannick Cojan (Martin Swiss) et Martin Nuckle (VW-Trek). Au classement général, Gilbert termine premier, suivi de Cojan, qui a aussi terminé comme premier maître au classement, et de Sébastien Moquin (Colnago-Carrera). Le maillot vert n'a échappé aux mains de Nuckle que par 9 points, lui qui était à 30 points de cette troisième position avant la course de ce soir. La conclusion de la 25e édition s'est fait en grand, feux d'artifices, musique, champagne à l'appui.

Le rythme imposé dès les premiers coups de pédales était rapide et les attaques ont été nombreuses. Tout semblait indiquer que les gagnants se révéleraient lors du sprint final : " C'était la finale et tout le monde voulait gagner, tout le monde faisait des attaques, tout le monde voulait faire des points aux sprints intermédiaires ", a expliqué Martin Gilbert. Bruno Langlois s'est entre autres illustré par une échappée de quelques tours lorsqu'il restait environ 6 tours à faire. Il a par la suite abandonné la course lorsqu'il s'est fait rejoindre par le peloton dans l'avant-dernier tour. Le sprint final a été enlevant, l'écart entre les gagnants étant réduit à presque rien.

" Je suis super content de ma victoire et j'ai eu pas mal d'aide de mes coéquipiers ce soir, ils m'ont encore donné un bon coup de main pour sortir au sprint. Autrement, j'ai juste eu à m'assurer qu'il n'y avait pas personne de dangereux autour de moi et à garder mon jus pour le bon moment ", a dit Martin Gilbert. " Je suis très heureux de mon titre mais une course comme ça, c'est sûr que ça se gagne pas tout seul et il faut mentionner le bon travail de mes coéquipiers, celui de Josée Robitaille et de mon entraîneur Eric Van Den Eynde qui sont tous en arrière de moi ", a-t-il tenu à rajouter. Martin Gilbert aura le temps de savourer encore un peu sa victoire avant de s'envoler avec son coéquipier Alexandre Cloutier vers Quito en Équateur pour les Championnats panaméricains sur piste samedi matin.

Martin Nuckle se dit quant à lui satisfait de sa performance à Lachine cette année, même s'il est passé à un cheveu près de se mériter le maillot vert : " Moquin n'a pas fait beaucoup de points ce soir et ça m'a permis de vraiment me rapprocher de la 3e place. Je suis content en général parce que j'ai quand même gagné une étape et j'ai fini troisième ce soir à la finale. " Le Grand Prix de St-Bruno aura lieu cette fin de semaine et Martin Nuckle, originaire de St-Bruno, espère y faire belle figure : " J'ai fini quelque chose comme 5e ou 7e l'an passé et j'espère bien avoir un podium cette année. "

Volkswagen-Trek prendra donc part cette fin de semaine au Grand Prix de St-Bruno samedi soir puis à la course Montréal-Québec dimanche.

We had 35 riders come out on this hot, humid evening including 2002 Master A National Time Trial Champion SEAN SCOTT and SUE PALMER-KOMAR who recently won silver in the Commonwealth Games Road Race. Right off the bat DESI DESROCHERS and STEVE HAMILTON broke off the front but were quickly caught. Next JAY MACLAREN and FRANK PRESTON joined DESI in another short-lived break. Then PIERS DAVIDGE and SEAN SCOTT formed another breakaway but were caught with 23 laps to go. PIERS took the $5.00 prime and JAY won the points prime. The group stayed together for the rest of the ride with the top five being PIERS DAVIDGE, RAYMOND LEE-OWN, BLAIR PURVIS, JEFF SHARAFBAYANI and CHRIS KOMAR.

Only one more ride to go, then on the 27th we're planning an awards presentation, draw prizes and pizza on the line. Hope to see you all there!
