February 3/10 8:48 am - HARRRP Cycling Program Helps Underprivileged Youth

Posted by Editoress on 02/3/10

The McQuesten and Jamesville Community Centres took 16 underprivileged kids to the London Velodrome for their second once in a life time opportunity.  That’s a jump from our original number of 5 in a little over a month.

At this time I am happy to report that three of the kids will be going back on Saturdays to participate in the FVCC Youth Program, as we have found volunteers to take them to the Velodrome. Chris Kirakopoulous, former President of Hamilton Cycling Club, has generously volunteered his time to take the MCC and JCC kids to the Velodrome as often as he can. We can send more but we need more volunteer drivers and coaches.

HARRRP is currently seeking support from the cycling industry and cycling community to begin a youth team that will participate in the Ontario Youth Cup. We are seeking in-kind donations of bikes, clothing, tools and any other dated cycling equipment to begin our club.

Cycling is only one component of our Youth Create programs. We have started a Lego Mindstorms club, an art club, we’re building greenhouses, meeting Olympians, politicians and civic leaders. In short, we’re doing all the cools stuff that kids want to do.

Let’s erase the word “at risk and underprivileged” from our vernacular and simply create opportunities.
