Those were the words and phrases to describe this weekend's adventures at the NORBA finals in Vermont!!

The weekend started with the Pro Women's cross country race on Friday morning. Because this was my first (and only) NORBA of the '99 season, my start position was a little farther back than I've been accustomed to in the last few years. Fortunately, the NORBA officials took my 8th place world ranking into consideration and seeded me on the 3rd row. May not seem too good at first, but I was one of the last women to register, so without seeding I was looking at about 6th or 7th row. The course was a modification of the last few years, with all the good parts left in. The major climbs were out in the open and wide so there was good potential for passing. The start blasted off at exactly 10AM (gotta love those on-time starts) and me and my closest 70 friends took off up the first climb. By the time we were a 1/3 of the way around the first lap, I had worked my way into about 12th. Feeling good at this point I punched the next climbs and bridged up to Jimena Juarez (RLX) in 4th by the start of the 2nd of 4 laps. At this point the lead pack of Shari Kain (RLX), Ruthie Mathes (Trek), and Alison Dunlap (GT) were a mere 40 sec ahead. Jimena and I worked together on this lap to close the gap and starting the 4th and final lap I was in 3rd just 10sec off Ruthie. Upon catching Ruthie, Mary Grigson (AIS) came from behind and attacked us both, both of us responding and chasing hard. The final popper before the major descent saw Mary and Ruthie digging deep for the single track and Chrissy finding very little left. We hauled into the finish with just seconds between us. The closest NORBA finish for the women yet!!
