With the conclusion of the Vuelta a Espana, the UCI World Ranking has been shuffled again. Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) has moved ahead of Alberto Contador (Astana) to take the lead with 551 points to Contador's 482, while Luis Leon Sanchez (Caisse d'Epargne) has moved up two spots to third with 403 points. Canada's Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin-Transitions) has dropped two spots - from sixth to eighth - at the 307 points he held after last weekend's ProTour races in Quebec and Montreal. Hesjedal is one point ahead team mate Tyler Farrar.

Spain, with the top three spots in the individual rankings, holds a commanding lead over Italy, with 1868 points to 1071. Canada sits in 15th place with 363 points - 85% of those points coming from Hesjedal and the remainder (56) from Svein Tuft after his strong performance in the Eneco Tour. Tuft is 81st in the standings. Together, Hesjedal and Farrar counted for almost three-quarters (73%) of Garmin-Transitions points.

There is one more race on the World Calendar, the Giro di Lombardia on October 16th. We asked Hesjedal yesterday if his season was concluded with the Queen's Park GP, and he said mostly likely, unless the team needs him to race again. In the team rankings, Astana leads with 986 points, followed by Liquigas-Doimo with 946 and Saxo Bank at 945. Garmin-Transitions is in seventh with 839 points.

Note: The World Rankings are slightly different from the ProTour. The 16 events of the ProTour are all on the World Calendar, but so are nine other 'Monument' events, such as Milan-San Remo and Tirreno-Adriatico. The UCI does not publish separate ProTour standings, only World Calendar rankings.
