The Canadian Cycling Association will once again be able to host the Burnaby New Year Challenge as the result of the Government of Canada's financial contribution, confirmed today by the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport).

The Burnaby New Year Challenge, an event sanctioned by the Union Cycliste International (UCI), will be held from December 27th to 30th. The competition will feature some of the top track racers in the world, including riders from the United States, New Zealand, and Europe. In addition to races featuring some of the top male and female cyclists from around the world, there will be categories for junior men and a host of supporting category races.  (Note:  Canadian Cyclist will be on-site providing coverage)

"The Government of Canada is pleased to support this international competition that showcases some of Canada's best male and female cyclists. After a two-year absence, elite-level international track racing returns to the Burnaby Velodrome," said Minister of State Lunn. "Our athletes dedicate so much as they pursue their dreams, represent Canada, and strive for excellence. I am confident we will see many of these cyclists in London in 2012."

"The Burnaby Challenge is an outstanding event for both developing and national team cyclists to compete in Canada against the top riders in the Americas," said Greg Mathieu, Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Cycling Association. "We are looking forward to a great competition over the holiday season and thank the Government of Canada for their continued support."

The Government of Canada believes that participation in sport is part of a healthy lifestyle and contributes to a healthy society. Hosting international sport events gives Canada the opportunity to showcase our country to athletes and spectators from all over the world and brings significant sport, economic, and social benefits to Canadians and their communities.

The Government of Canada is the single largest contributor to sport in Canada and supports participation and excellence from the playground to the podium. A contribution of $50,000 was provided to the Canadian Cycling Association through Sport Canada's Hosting Program.
