The Victoria School Cycling League kicks off April 5th with the SkilzJam MTB judged skills event. The 8 week series includes mountain bike freeride, super-D, cross country, cyclocross, and road events. The league is aimed at introducing middle and high school youth to several branches of competitive cycling. However, local Team BC and BC Cup podium riders often take part and show what a little dedication might lead to.
But the best part is just riding with peers, in an atmosphere a little more relaxed than regular sanctioned racing. School sport is sanctioned and insured by the Lower Island School Sports.
Interested parents and teachers register their schools team through their school athletic director. Details of the league and how to register are here.
For interested parents or coaches who have not volunteered in the school system before, the league can provide help in providing an acceptable offer to the school. Criminal record checks are required, but often a teacher may be available as a sponsor, if a community parent or coach steps up to do most of the technical work of getting a team of 4 or 6 riders to the races.
For more info on the league, how to organize a team, or help at an event, contact Lister Farrar at listerfarrar@telus.net.
