June 18/11 13:23 pm - Tour de Beauce: Stage 5 UPDATES

Posted by Editoress on 06/18/11

Stage 5 takes place in old Quebec City and along the St Lawrence.  9 laps of the 13.9 km loop for a  total of 125.1 kms

It is overcast and humid after overnight rain.

Overall leader, Mancebo, will find himself under pressure today and the teams are expected to gang up on him.

2pm

Lap 1 completed

A small group of 4 went away shortly after the start: Maarten Verschoor (Team Type 1 sanofi-aventis), Nicholas Hamilton (Team Canada), James Sparling (Raleigh) and Nick Friesen (H&R Block), but they did not establish much of a gap, and were brought back on the climb.  Near the end of the lap there was a crash as the pelopton turned left to start the climb up Cote de la Montagne, but it appears nothing serious.

2:15 pm

Lots of attacks and counter attacks.  Riders testing their legs and the reactions of the peloton.  Team Canada is being agressive - Adam Thuss  with Jamie  Sparling (Raleigh) took a flyer, then  Dom Rollin.  Team Spidertech is doing a lot of work on the front of the peloton trying to keep some control

2:23 pm

Soon starting Lap 3 and the peloton is all together

2:26 pm
Another attack as they crest the climb, Danny Summerhill (Chipotle), Bernardo Colex (Amore & Vita), Alex Howes (Chipotle), Francisco Mancebo Perez (Realcyclist.com)  are away.  Bruno Langlois (Spidertech p/b C10), Aaron Kemps (Fly V Australia) and Antoine Duchesne (Garneau-Club Chaussures- Norton Rose) have taken up the chase

Laps are taking just over 18 min .. so far.  I expect that will settle down a bit after ~ 5 laps

2:40 pm

Lap 3

As they start the climb to complete the 3rd lap, Bernardo Colex (Amore & Vita) attacks, going for the KOM points.  Francisco Mancebo (Realcyclist.com) jumps and is on his wheel.  Pure Black Racing swarms them both and take all the points.

The high speed is starting to splinter the Peloton.  3 groups have now started forming.

2:50 pm

There is a group of 17   16 now that have seperated and have a 1 min gap

Jake Rytlewski (Kenda), David Boily, Bruno Langlois (Spidertech p/b C10), William Dugan (Team Type 1 sanofi-aventis), Christian Meier (UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team), Johnnie Walker, Bernard Sulzberger, Taylor Sheldon ( V Australia), Glen Chadwick, Michael Northey, James Williamson (Pure Black Racing), Kin San Wu (Champion System), Richard Handley (Raleigh), Rob Bush (Chipotle), Antoine Duchesne, Arnaud Papillon (Garneau-Club Chaussures- Norton Rose)

2:59 pm

End of lap 4.  Gap is 2:17.  François Parisien (Spidertech p/b C10) is making his way up to the leaders

3:10 pm

Lap 5, on the climb

Amore & Vita at front of 2nd group, making a half heated attempt at chasing.  Mancebo isolated

3:15 pm

End of Lap 5.  Gap is 1:33.  Parisien back in 2nd group

3:19 pm

Realcyclist.com has gone to the front, but the gap has gone back up to 2:15

3:31 pm

As they near the end of the 6th lap, the gap is 3:41 at the base of the climb

3:40 pm

Start of lap 7, no change.

There are no riders in break that have any chance of taking over the lead, so they may just let it go

3:52 pm

As they hit the climb near the end of the lap, the gap is close to 4 min

3:57 pm

At the end of lap 7, the gap is 4:30

4:04 pm

Alex Howes (Chipotle)  attacked from the 2nd group just after the end ot the 7th lap and had as much as a 15 second gap trying to bridge up, .... but was unsuccessful

Team Spidertech is now positioning itself at the front of the 2nd group.  They have 2 up in the front group

Lead group is:

Jake Rytlewski (Kenda), David Boily, Bruno Langlois (Spidertech p/b C10), William Dugan (Team Type 1 sanofi-aventis), Christian Meier (UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team), Johnnie Walker, Bernard Sulzberger, Taylor Sheldon ( V Australia), Glen Chadwick, Michael Northey, James Williamson (Pure Black Racing), Kin San Wu (Champion System), Richard Handley (Raleigh), Rob Bush (Chipotle), Antoine Duchesne, Arnaud Papillon (Garneau-Club Chaussures- Norton Rose)
