Harnett to provide Marketing and Business development solutions

Curt Harnett, a pioneer, champion and legend of Canadian Cycling, has joined Team SpiderTech to strengthen its marketing and business development efforts as the team strives toward becoming the first Canadian-based World Tour team and compete at the Tour de France. Harnett will add depth and value to the team constantly in search of ideal partnerships and sponsor activations in Canadian markets.

“I am both honoured and excited to work with Steve in fulfilling his dream of sending a Canadian Team to the Tour. It is ambitious, maybe even as bold as the famed Crazy Canucks, but I feel that the Canadian marketplace is ready for a scenario where the famed maillot jaune has a Canadian name in it and on it,” said Harnett, three-time Olympic medallist for Canada in track cycling and member of both the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame and Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.

Harnett adds: “A number of Canadian Cyclists are real medal contenders heading into London this summer, and the 2015 Pan Am Games will be bringing a world class, four-season indoor velodrome to Milton, Ontario, in the coming years. Cycling in Canada is on the upswing in a big way and there is no better opportunity for Corporate Canada to take advantage of this momentum than getting on board with Steve’s vision.”

Steve Bauer, who initiated the talks with Harnett, couldn’t be happier with the addition to his team. “Curt has been at the top as world-class athlete and continues to have the best interest of the sport in his heart. Since winning Olympic Medal Curt has built a wealth of experience in the business world. Our vision to become Canada’s first professional cycling team to ride the Tour De France is still very vibrant, and Curt’s addition will help us communicate this vision we all share at Team SpiderTech.”

Harnett retired from cycling after his bronze medal performance at the 1996 Olympic Games, he attended the Sydney and Athens Olympic Games as a colour commentator in cycling for CBC Sports. He is heavily involved in numerous charities across Canada with a strong affinity toward Special Olympics Canada and Right to Play.

Harnett recently acted as the Assistant Chef de Mission for the Canadian Team at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico and will be a part of the Olympic Consortium Broadcast Team in London covering Track Cycling.
