Gila Stage 3 - Pro Men
Courtesy Mercury

Mercury's Mike Sayers took today's 73 mile stage from a breakaway group of 5 just a bit ahead of the field.

8 miles into the stage was a hot spot sprint where Gragus just nipped Bouchard-Hall for the time bonus and bumped Derek out of 2nd on GC, though just by 5 seconds. The next 15 miles was all climbing with a number of attacks, and though nothing stuck, Shaklee was brought down to 2 riders on the front.

On a tight and twisty descent Jan Bratkowski and Roy Knickman simply out rode the rest and came onto the flats with a small gap over the field with John Lieswyn barely hanging on their wheels. Gord Fraser and Tony Cruz from Saturn bridged up to the three ahead and quickly built up a gap over a failing Shaklee team.

Only after Shaklee fell apart the 7-up and Jelly Belly squads helped in the chase, and after a long chase through a windy valley the group was caught on a climb 10 miles from the finish. From there it was rolling with lots of attacks into the finish.

At 3 miles to go a small group slipped off the front with Mike Sayers, Clark Sheehan, Eric Wohlberg, Burke Swindlehurst and a Mexican National rider. Sayers easily out sprinted his companions and took the stage win.

Eric Wohlberg remained in the overall lead.
