Tour of Slovenia

National team coach/manager is sending in reports from the Canadian team project at the Tour of Slovenia

The national men's team is now in Slovenia participating in the Tour of Slovenia, a 6 day stage race that virtually goes all over the small east European country. The team is made of Michael Barry, Sylvain Beauchamp, Charles Dionne, Paul Kelly, Mark Walters and Brian Walton. For some on the team the goals of this race will be for preparation leading up to US pro champs and for others it's another chance to attain the highly praised Olympic criteria.

Prologue - 2 kms in Nova Mesto

Considering the stages to come this prologue was to be just a formality in which the results determine the leader's jerseys and the order of the race caravan for tomorrow's stage. For the Canucks it was to be a chance to work the kinks out from previous days travelling. The results for the whole team were average, which is good considering the jet lag.

The winner of the stage was Mapei rider Lazslo Bodrogi from Hungary with a time of 2:23 placing top Canadian finisher, Sylvain Beauchamp at 10 seconds and the other canucks not to far back either.

As mentioned, these times will weigh in very lightly once the Friday and Saturday stages roll around.

Tomorrow is a relatively flat stage that takes the group from Catez to Radenci for a distance of 198 kms. Beware of potentially dangerous GC riders going up the road????
