August 8/13 12:28 pm - GranFondo Canada Announces Official Course for Inaugural GranFondo Niagara Falls

GranFondo Canada has announced the official course for the inaugural GranFondo Niagara Falls which is set to take place in the Niagara Region on Saturday, September 14th. The mass-participation cycling event will start and finish right at the Falls and take participants on a tour through the beautiful Niagara Region. Taking advantage of the Niagara Escarpment as much as possible, the route gains over 1,100 M during its 127 KM of awesome scenery.

With similar events in Whistler and Banff, the organizers are bringing a wealth of experience to Niagara for this history making event. In order to ensure the event is as safe as possible, the roads will be completely closed to traffic for over 90% of the route, including the Niagara Parkway which is an historic first. The course will take riders from the Niagara Parkway to Niagara-On-The-Lake, through the region’s acclaimed wine country and idyllic country side including the winding rollers around Short Hills Provincial Park and finish back at the Falls.

“After months of hard work, we’re proud to announce the official course of the GranFondo Niagara Falls. The Niagara region is beautiful and we think the course showcases it wonderfully,” says Kevin Thomson, CEO and Chief Enthusiast of GranFondo Canada. “We’ve always believed in providing a dedicated cycling express lane for all our events for the ultimate riding experience.”

In order to secure the completely dedicated, car-free lane for riders, organizers worked with many stakeholders including Niagara Parks Commission, Ministry of Transportation, Ontario Provincial Police, Niagara Regional Police, Canadian Border Services Agency and Niagara Falls Bridges Commission, along with the Niagara Region and their communities of Niagara Falls, Niagara-On-The-Lake, St. Catharines, Pelham and Thorold.

"The support we've received from our partners in the Niagara Region has been overwhelming. Their backing has made this event possible," says Dean Hachey, the event director for GranFondo Niagara Falls.

Event organizers have also announced a free concert for all riders, family, friends, spectators and the general public. Juno award winning artists Barney Bentall and Jim Cuddy will play at Queen Victoria Park at 1:00 pm after taking part in the 127 KM ride.
