Tour de France

Stage 11 - Bagneres-de-Bigorre to Revel 218.5 km

Another day for breakaways, with two rider taking off in the 14th kilometre of the stage. Erik Dekker (Rabobank) and Santiago Botero (Kelme) are the pair who went clear, and if Dekker's name seems familiar it is because this stage marked his 3rd 100 kilometre plus breakaway of this year's Tour!

After yesterday's incredibly difficult mountain stage, today's 6 climbs are relatively minor - 2 Cat. 3's and 4 Cat. 4's. The break reached a maximum lead of nearly 15 minutes, putting Botero less than 3 minutes behind Armstrong. Once the gap went into double digits, U.S. Postal began to up the tempo in the peloton, with all of their riders at the front. The effort didn't have too much effect on the front gap to start with - with 30 kilometres to go the front duo were still 13 minutes ahead.

At this point Banesto replaced U.S. Postal at the front of the chase, wanting to protect their GC positions for Jose Jimenez and Alex Zulle. The gap started to shrink fairly rapidly, down to 8:40 by the final climb with less than 8 kilometres to go. Behind, the peloton was splitting up due to the speed of the chase, however, all the top players were still in the front group.

Botero began to attack his breakaway companion as the pair entered the final few kilometres, but to no avail, as Dekker jumped to take his second stage of this year's Tour. Behind, a group of 7 attacked the peloton to try for third on the stage, with Telekom chasing very hard. However, the group managed to stay clear and Mario Aerts (Lotto) took the sprint for third.

No change to the top standings in the overall GC. The riders have a rest day tomorrow, before facing Mont Ventoux.
