TREXLERTOWN, Pa. -- Australian Darryn Hill stole the spotlight from American
Marty Nothstein Saturday night in the World Track Cup at Lehigh Valley
Velodrome.

In front of a partisan crowd in Nothstein‚s hometown, Hill, the 1995 world
sprint champion, won the men‚s match sprint final in two rides.

„Darryn was the man tonight,‰ a disappointed Nothstein said. „That wasn‚t the
real Marty out there.‰

Nothstein has been suffering from a fever since he returned from the first
round of World Track Cup last week in Colombia.

„The way I was feeling tonight, I just wanted to make it to the final.‰

He lost his opening semifinal ride to German Eyk Pokorny, then won the next
two rides to advance to face Hill. Pokorny defeated American Marcelo Arrue,
Alburtis, Pa., for third place.

Nothstein, the current world keirin champion, will compete in that event
Saturday, the last day of the competition.

In other action Saturday night, Canadian Brian Walton won the men‚s points
race, edging Julian Dean of New Zealand and Michael Sandstod of Denmark.
Walton, the Olympic silver medalist in the event, said he had not competed on
the track since the Olympics. American Mariano Friedick, Brentwood, Calif.,
was seventh.

In the team pursuit, Russia set a new Lehigh Valley Velodrome track record in
the final with a time of four minutes, 15.381 seconds, defeating the United
States in the final. Spain was third.

World and Olympic champion Felicia Ballanger of France moved into the
semifinals of the womenís sprint, where she will face Olympic silver medalist
Michelle Ferris of Australia. Galina Enioukhina of Russia will face Canadian
Tanya Dubnicoff in the other semifinal.

Action will conclude Saturday. Other finals include the keirin, Olympic
sprint, Madison and womenís individual pursuit. The women‚s individual
pursuit field includes American Rebecca Twigg, Colorado Springs, Colo., the
six-time world champion, three-time world champion Jeannie Longo of France
and Olympic champion Antonella Bellutti of France.

Changes at Syncros

Pippin Osborne, who co-founded Syncros Applied Technology with Peter Hamilton in 1987, announced today (May 30th) that he will be leaving the company to start an independent product design studio.

Pippin says his new company will be active in a number of sports, including cycling. Continued involvement with Syncros is a definite.

Together, Pippin and Peter designed the original Syncros components that built the company. However, Pippin says he‚s leaving the Syncros product design team in very good hands. „We‚ve come a long way from Pete and I trying to figure out our first lathe‰, says Pippin. „The engineers on our design staff came through with our new `97 products, which are some of the best we‚ve ever produced, including the forged crank stem, new BB and our first rim‰.

According to Peter, Pippin‚s new company ... „could be huge. When it comes to product design, I‚ve never seen anyone who could compare with him. As much as we hate to see him go, you can‚t help but be excited for him. We‚ve had a great time over the last ten years. People always tell you not to go into business with friends. Well, it worked for me‰.
