HCANADIAN MIXTE TANDEM STRIKES AGAIN Julie Cournoyer, from Sherbrooke, and Alexandre Cloutier, from Sainte-Foy, won the Criterium of Catalonia and earned the second place of the Monjuic Ascent in Barcelona on October 18 and 19 in an international competition for visualy impared cyclists. The 1996 Paralympic gold winning tandem from Canada made it again while racing in a 42 km criterium race on the circuit of the Rambla de la Marina in Barcelona. Cournoyer and Cloutier won the race in 1 hour 1 minute and 8 seconds while sprinting at the finish line against the Spanish team mad äe of Angeles Fernandez Lebrato and José Angel Santiago. But the Lebrato-Santiago tandem got its way in the famous year end road recent event, the Montjuic Ascent. The Spaniards raced the 3,5 km hill climb in 8 minutes 34 seconds while the Canadians took the second place 9 seconds slower. Participation of Cournoyer and Cloutier to the Barcelona events is part of the Canadian Cycling Paralympic Team program in preparation for the 1998 World Championships for handicaped cyclists. The two athletes were coached by Vincent Jourdain, National coach for blind cyclists attached to the Bromont National Training Center.
