ANNE SAMPLONIUS ... SUPRISE GUEST !

Anne Samplonius is still smiling about it ... Imagine, the Canadian,
23rd in the GC played a trick on all the favorites by getting away, 3km

without success.

Samplonious, winner of this classic in '94, sped away from the first 10
racers in the GC who were all together.

SPECIALIZED All Seasons CANADA CUP

Canadian Cyclist DOWNHILL, Boler Mountain, London

Nearly 175 riders took part in the first Canada Cup of the year, at Boler Mountain ski hill in London, Ontario. Riders described the 1 kilometre course as well laid out and tricky. After the riders left the starting gate they almost immediately went into a sharp left and down one of the steepest pitches of the run - a bad line here meant losing valuable time. The middle part of the course saw numerous crashes, as riders tried to carry too much speed through the switchbacks and over the BMX-like berms. One double berm in particular cost many riders (who did not managed to jump both) time. The final 250 metres was a flatout sprint along a hardpacked dirt road to the finish line.

Top Canadian downhillers Elladee Brown and Andrew Shandro were absent, competing in Europe on the World Cup circuit. However, this left the gate open for lesser known riders to show their stuff. In the Junior Expert Men‚s event, the winner was B.C. rider Dustin Adams (Norco), whose time of 1:10.78 was barely half a second slower than the fastest Elite rider. Adams is a new face to easterners, however, we are sure to see and hear lots more about this rider. As expected, Damiann Skelton (Norco) was the winner of the Elite women‚s race, her time of 1:18.65 nearly 2 seconds ahead of second place Roz Voss ((KHS Ryders/RST/MRP). The Elite men‚s winner was a complete surprise to everyone, including himself! Dylan Lanspeary (OGC-Fisher) is a southern Ontario cross-country racer from flat Windsor, competing in his first downhill. He said after the race that his downhill training consisted of riding the 200‚ high mound of dirt and garbage that the city of Windsor is building! Lanspeary turned in the fastest time of the day - 1:10.23, with Fredericton rider Trevor Porter (Team Marin) second (third fastest time of the day) at 1:10.99, and George Cobham third (1:11.48).

Tomorrow the cross-country races take place on a 10 kilometer circuit, with the main events going off at around noon. Rain (which held off today until just after the last rider) could play a major factor, if it continues. Talking to Elites Bill Hurley (Schwinn) and Eric Tourville (Oryx), they said that if it gets muddy every hill will become a run. This will favour cyclo-crossers, such as Hurley.
