The first of the three Grand Tours, the Giro d'Italia, will start tomorrow (Friday) in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, with a 9.8 kilometre time trial. Twenty two teams of nine riders, for a total of 198 cyclists, are on the start list.

There are three Canadians in the race - 2012 giro winner Ryder Hesjedal (Trek-Segafredo), Canadian time trial champion Hugo Houle (AG2R La Mondiale) and Svein Tuft (Orica-GreenEDGE). There was supposed to be a fourth, Mike Woods (Cannondale Pro Cycling), but a broken hand put Woods out of action.

Canadian Press did an interview with Hesjedal, in which the Victoria rider said this could be his final Grand Tour. He will not commit to either the Tour de France or the Rio Games until after the Giro, where he is the team's GC rider.
