August 1/17 16:02 pm - Tour of Utah: Stage 2, Piccoli 3rd on stage and GC

Posted by Editoress on 08/1/17

Sepp Kuss flew up the steep ascent to Snowbasin Resort to finish second in stage two and take the overall lead at the Tour of Utah. Kuss' stellar result was due to incredible teamwork from Rally Cycling that also garnered Adam de Vos the Most Aggressive Rider jersey, and Rob Britton seventh on the stage. In addition to results on the roads of Utah, Danny Pate found success online, winning the Tour of Utah Most Loved Veteran fan poll.

"Wearing the yellow jersey in Utah means a lot," said Kuss. "I'm fortunate to have teammates that believe in me. Eric (Young) and Danny (Pate) did a lot of work to bring the day's breakaway back, and Adam had an excellent run at the finish. It was a big team effort, and it feels great to reward that with the yellow jersey. In the finale, I just decided to mark Bookwalter and Robin Carpenter in the last few hundred meters. Bookwalter smoked me in the sprint, but I'm happy to get second, and the jersey is a good consolation prize. There is still a lot of racing ahead, but for the moment I'm just going to enjoy it."

Rally Cycling put on a masterclass display of teamwork on the final ascent to Snowbasin Resort. As the peloton ascended the lower slopes of the climb, Jhonatan Narvaez (Axeon Hagens Berman) attacked and de Vos launched off the front in pursuit. De Vos quickly caught and dropped Narvaez and put in a tremendous solo effort with seven kilometers left to climb. Behind, the fractured peloton chased frantically, eventually reeling him in just under two kilometers from the line. De Vos's bold move for stage glory netted him the day's Most Aggressive Rider jersey.

"I gave it everything I had!" said de Vos. "I was sitting near the front riding tempo when Narvaez made his move, and I followed immediately. He slowed to a pace I wasn't keen on, so I made another attack and went solo. There were moments when I thought I was going to hold off the pack, but I knew whatever happened I had two guys behind that could win the stage."

"Everyone on the team is excited for Sepp," said Team Director Pat McCarty. "It is his first leader's jersey in a major tour, so it's new territory for him. Sepp has a good head on his shoulders and handles pressure well. The time trial is tomorrow, he is tied for time, so it will be a battle to keep it."

Along with the yellow and Most Aggressive Rider jerseys, Danny Pate won the Most Loved Veteran jersey. The unique competition is decided by the fans voting online at the Tour of Utah website. Pate has been a fixture of the professional peloton for 18 years and counts two podium placings in the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia in addition to a U-23 World Championship time trial title among his biggest achievements.
