Tour de Langkawi, Malaysia

It is a little over a week until the start of the Tour de Langkawi. The organizers have released an updated list of the teams and riders (below). Canada will have 8 riders in the race on three teams (Canada, Mecury Viatel and Saturn). Team Canada is more of a development squad, although every year they manage to pull off at least one stellar ride (witness Mark Walters' 2 days in the yellow jersey last year). Gord Fraser will again be the designated sprinter for Mercury Viatel, and is bound to be hungry for the stage win that eluded him last year. Saturn brings Langkawi veteran Mike Barry back, although, somewhat surprisingly, former stage winner Eric Wohlberg is not on the team. Among other key players are Andrea Tafi (Mapei-Quick Step), Ivan Quaranta (Alexia Alluminio) and Pascal Herve (Alexia Alluminio).

We will be providing daily coverage for the race, starting February 4th.

USAC Hosts Junior Coaching Conference
(Courtesy USCF)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (January 24, 2001) - USA Cycling is hosting the 2001 Youth Bicycle Racing Programs Conference at the United States Olympic Training Complex February 1-4. The conference is for coaches and managers of youth and junior programs and athletes. 2000 Olympic gold medalist Marty Nothstein will participate, as well as his coach, Gil Hatton.

Conference organizers are proud to announce that all of the available spaces for the conference have been filled, bringing in approximately 40 overnight guests and five local coaches.

Attendants come from all facets of junior cycling and will work with all skill levels and disciplines. Coaches from clubs and teams, high schools, YMCA and other community-based programs will attend the conference.

USA Cycling has held similar programs in the past, but has made several changes to the schedule and seminars offered for 2001. Licensing for Club and Expert Coaching is available, in addition to CPR and American Red Cross/USOC Sport Safety Training for Coaches certification.

Lectures and panel discussions will be held to target many of the important issues dealing with coaching junior cyclists and developing junior programs. Included in the seminars will be round table discussions and group sessions with leaders of top programs from around the country, weight-training programs, tips on recruitment, and information on junior development camps. Other tutorials will deal with teen sports psychology, liability and insurance issues, corporate tax status and program funding.

Coordinators are bringing in some of the best outside sources to assist junior coaches with the specific concerns of younger athletes. United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and other National Governing Body employees will also assist in the program.

The USAC Development Foundation and coaching education coordinator Sam Callan are producing the event.

Happy Birthday To...

Chantal Boulianne and Eric Cseff (both January 22nd), and Paul Spadaccini (today).
