The German duo of Maximilian Brandl and Georg Egger are back to defend their 2018 Epic Israel title with victory in the Migdal Epic Israel 2019 Prologue.

Approximately 600 riders took to the start line for a 22km short prologue which officially opened the Migdal Epic Israel Epic 2019, the seventh edition of the event and the first to be held in the Western Galilee region. It proved an intense prologue which determined the line-up order for Stage 1 tomorrow morning.

From the courtyard of the regional council, the pairs departed in a south-easterly direction between orchards and the city of Acre, one of the most beautiful and important historical cities in Israel. After a quick flight along the promenade, riders climbed for a short but steep ascent of the ancient steps that led them to the top of the Old Acre Wall, the historic wall that repelled Napoleon and his siege in 1799.

After a high intensity urban ride through the Old Town's narrow alleys, filled with large crowds of local spectators, the riders embarked on a sandy cycling section of the coastline, drawing them back to the competition village at the Meta Asher Regional Council.

Fastest across the finish line and leaders of the men’s classification were Brandl and Egger, over a minute clear of their nearest rivals. In the women’s field, American team Chloe Woodruff and Erin Huck took prologue victory, while Israeli pairings dominate the standings in the Mixed, Masters and Grand Masters categories.
