Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) won the 108th edition of the Scheldeprijs with a powerful sprint, beating other top contendors to the finish.

A start in Terneuzen was not possible so Schoten became the launch point for the oldest Flemish spring classic on the calendar. At the start there were many fast men for what is called the unofficial World Championships for sprinters. Ewan, Bennett and Ackermann, among others, had their teams work the 10 laps of 17.3 km.

On the second lap, despite the extremely fast pace, there was an early breakaway. Eight riders escaped: Wirtgen (Bingoal - Wallonie Bruxelles), Schär (CCC Team), Gruzdev (Astana Pro Team), Cavendish (Bahrain - McLaren), Havik (Riwal Securitas Cycling Team), McCabe (Israel Start-Up Nation), Juul-Jensen (Mitchelton-Scott) and Askey (Groupama-FDJ).

The breakaway never managed to gain  more than 1:25 by the peloton who kept them in sight. With two laps to go Cavendish dropped out of the front group as the peloton brought the leading group down to a 30 second lead.

As the final lap started the difference was still about 17 seconds. At the front Askey tried to attack from the break and was joined by the Dutchman Havik who then attacked solo. In the peloton it was Deceunick-Quick-Step and Trek-Segafredo who assumed control.

At 8 km from the finish the story of Havik and the remainder of the break was caught. The peloton then controlled the race perfectly and was able to start preparing for the sprint. The trains formed for the sprinters at Deceuninck - Quick-Step, Trek-Segafredo, UAE Team Emirates, Lotto-Soudal and BORA-hansgrohe.

The last kilometre it was Alpecin-Fenix that brought Merlier to the front and Kristoff was preparing the sprint for Jasper Philipsen. Off of Kristoff's wheel, Ewan suddenly came to the front. He sprinted to victory ahead of Ackermann and Bonifazio. The number two, Ackermann, would eventually be relegated for deviating from his sprint line, resulting in a crash of Jensen, causing Bonifazio to move up a place and Coquard to take third.

Top Canadian was Guillaume Boivin (Israel Start - Up Nation) in 24th at 5s back.
