Hesjedal Third in Italy

Chrissy Redden just sent us news that her Subaru-Gary Fisher team mate Ryder Hesjedal was third in a race near Padova, Italy called the Grand Fondo. It is a 50 kilometre point-to-point event with over 300 elite entries (900 riders in total). Chrissy will join Ryder and most other top mountain bike pros in the next day or so to prepare for the World Cup in Sarentino, Italy this coming weekend.

Information:
Training camp is focussed on Track cycling, with additional road events available (ABA sanctioned stage race) for endurance athletes to participate in if necessary. This camp is being held in the month preceding the Canadian National Track Cycling Championships (Edmonton, AB - July 5-8). The camp will be focussed on all Olympic track cycling disciplines, as well as non-Olympic style events (i.e. miss and out, scratch races,etc). Therefore all athletes (regardless of event specificity) are encouraged to attend.

Camp is open to athletes 16 yr. (junior cycling age) and older. Camp size is limited to 25 athletes. As this camp is intended as a development camp. Masters athletes are encouraged to submit their registrations, but realize that junior and/or elite athletes will take precedence.

Athletes are instructed to arrange their transport to include transfers to Edmonton if they plan on participating in the Canadian National Track Championships.

The camp is organized over the entire month of June, but weekly visits (participation) are accepted if prior authorization is granted by Head Coach (on an individual athlete basis).

Our specialized team of cycling coaches and sport science experts will provide you with all the knowledge and technical information you need to become a stronger and faster track cyclist.

Registration Procedures:
Athletes are requested to e-mail their intent to attend the training camp to Kurt Innes no later than May 25, 2001. Coaches or Training Centre reference letters are due at this time also (see below for explanation).

Intent to attend e-mails should include Athlete name, gender, age, and address, cycling club, coaching contact, brief cycling bio.

Transportation from the airport can be arranged if athletes include their arrival times along with the above information.


Camp Highlights & Schedule (tentative):

June 1 - Arrival into Calgary

June 2-3 - Bikeshevic Grand Prix (Olympic style, and pack style races)

June 16-17 - Alberta Provincial Championships (Olympic style races)

Thursday night track League organized by the Calgary Bicycle Track League (CBTL) a local Calgary Track cycling club. (June 7, 14,21,28)

Tuesday night Criteriums, organized by Soma Cycle a local retail establishment and cycling club. (June 5,12,19,26)

Headwinds Stage Race (June 23-24), in Lethbridge, AB. This 3-stage event (I.T.T, R.R, and Criterium) is available for endurance athletes to compete in. Full coaching support will be offered for this event.

Transfer to Edmonton - June 30

Canada Day Criterium (July 1). In Edmonton, AB. This is an annual Criterium event organized by ERTC (local Edmonton club). Full coaching support will be offered for this event in Edmonton if athletes are interested in participating in event.

Monday - Recovery track technical workout (or road ride)
Tuesday - AM) track skills workout, PM) Criterium
Wednesday - Endurance ride
Thursday- Recovery, PM) Track Racing
Friday - AM) Track skills video analysis, PM) Road ride or track workout
Saturday - AM) road ride (group), PM) Track time trials
Sunday - Road race or rest day

This camp is organized by the National Cycling Centre-Calgary, with funding support from the Canadian Cycling Association, and support from the National Sport Centre-Calgary.

Fees & Registration:
This camp is being offered as a development camp by the CCA (and the National Cycling Centre-Calgary), no athlete fees are charged for this camp.

Athletes will be required to include a reference letter from their club coach, provincial association, or Regional training Centre along with their registration for the camp.

Letters of reference must be faxed to the Calgary Centre (403) 284-4815, attention Kurt Innes.

Athletes are responsible for the expenses associated with their own transport to and from Calgary, as well as lodging in Calgary during the camp.

Affordable accommodations are available at Canada Olympic Park ($20.00 per night / 2 per room, or $13.33 per night / 3 per room, $10.00 per night / 4 per room). Reservations will be made by the National Cycling Centre-Calgary for athletes requiring accommodations.

Required Equipment or extras:
Track bicycle in good working condition.
Aero Bars (clip on bars) for use in time trial events during racing, and in specific time trial workouts.
Road Bicycle for use in Criterium events, and specific road workouts during training camp.
Racing License (ABA, or out of province)
