Volkswagen-Les Ailes Uses Classique de Québec to Prep Grand Prix de Beauce

Quebec ˆ June 16, 2001: The cyclists that will take part in the Grand Prix de Beauce had the opportunity to get a good workout Saturday at the Classique presented in the Quebec City area. The 165,7 km stage, which does not count in the Grand Prix G.C. took the racers twice around Orleans Island. (once around = 67 km)

14 racers broke away from the pack during the second loop around the Island. 13 of the 19 teams were represented in the break and at the finish the leaders had 9 minutes on the peloton.

Josee Robitaille, technical director for the Vokswagen / Les Ailes team, said: "Today's race (Saturday) was for us a chance to get ready. For some of our racers, this is the longest competition of their career. Everybody will have personal objectives and, for our team, we aim to finish in 12th or 13th place in the final team G.C.".

Italian Elio Aggiano (Mapei-Quick Step) won today's Classique crossing the line ahead of Poland's Zbigniew Piatek (Mroz ˆ Supradyn Witaminy). About 20 seconds later came Piatek's team-mate Raimondas Bilcinskas followed by Canadians Gordon Fraser (Mercury / Viatel) and Dominique Perras (Ficonseils / RCC Conseils Assurances) at, respectively 33 and 35 seconds of the winner.

The Volkswagen / Les Ailes team members finished in the pack: Martin Gilbert (40th at 9 min. 33 sec), Martin Nuckle (60th, at 9 min. 47 sec.) Corey Gladish (63rd, s.t.) Francois Parisien (71st, s.t.), while Cory Jay (10 min. 19 sec) and Bruno Langlois (11 min. 27 sec.) completed the race in 103rd and 108th place respectively. Martin St-Laurent could not finish the race, having flatted at the 61st km.

Marc-Andre Salois and Alexandre Cloutier traded their Volkswagen / Les Ailes jerseys to race for the Quebec team. They finished 50th and 84th at 9 min. 47 sec from the winner.

The official beginning of the Grand Prix cycliste de Beauce will be on Monday evening in Quebec City. A 13.3 km T.T.T. will be presented around the Plaines of Abraham.
