Day 1 (PM session)

1000-Meter Time Trial
1. Michael Pedroso (CUB) 1:05.021

Canadian Champion Jim Fisher (Calgary) came up mere centimeters short of repeating his Pan American Championships from 1 year ago. Jim rode a seasonal best time, but was beaten by Cuba's newest 1000 Meter specialist. 19 year old Michael Pedrosa of Cuba is the newest in the line of very successful Cuban 1000 Meter riders.

Jim rode a very good ride, finishing very strong but lost the eventual ride in the 1st half lap of the race. The young Cuban started .4 of a second faster than Jim in the first 125 Meters and this cost Jim the race. Jim did finish .7 of a second faster than the Cuban in the final 500 Meters, but the Cuban had .76 of a second lead in the 1st 500 Meters and this was enough for him to take the win.

Men's Sprint 1st Round.
All 3 Canadian riders were successful in the opening round of the sprint tournament tonight. Steen Madsen defeated J.Maio (BRA) in an 11.290 final 200 Meter time. Doug Baron defeated D.Aguilar (CRC) , and Lars Madsen was victorious over J.Morona of Brazil. All 3 Canadian sprinters will move into the 1/8 finals tomorrow evening, followed by the quarter finals also tomorrow night.

Men's Miss and Out. (Elimination race)

3. Juan Cabrera (CHI)

The men's elimination race was an addition to the program for riders who didn't qualify for the men's pursuit finals. As both Canadian riders were guaranteed top 8 finishes in the pursuit, they opted to miss the miss and out event!

Day # 1 comes to a close here in Medellin, with all Canadian riders enjoying success. Canadian riders were very prominent in the results this opening day of the championships, and Jim Fisher started off the Canadian podium charge with our first medal of the championships.
