Coast-to-Coast Ride Update - January 9, 2002

On Saturday, January 5, 2002, Kevin Wallace and Jeff Rushton began their 24 day Coast-to-Coast Ride Against Cancer, a cycling journey to raise money for cancer research. Jeff and Kevin are riding from San Diego, California to St. Augustine, Florida over 24 days to raise funds for two great charities: the Lance Armstrong Foundation (US Donations) and the Trillium Breast Cancer Fund (Canadian Donations).

Today, January 9th, marks Day 5 of their ride. In the first four days, Kevin and Jeff have ridden 844km/524 miles, climbed 8220m/26,968 ft, raised over $95,000 for the charities and been featured on local NBC and WB TV affiliates in San Diego and Phoenix! On today's ride (dedicated to Bill Johnston), Jeff and Kevin tackle the first of two days crossing the Continental Divide - their two toughest days of the journey!

Follow their journey and find full details of the event, including Dedications, Daily Updates and Pictures can be found at:

O-Cup 2002 Meeting
Courtesy Adam Ruppel

It was great to see over 30 downhill competitors, and some x-country riders, view their concerns and ideas for the 2002 Bonham and Company Ontario Cup Series. This is the first time that riders have been invited to a meeting and given input to improve the quality of the Ontario Cups.

Downhill Series

- More volunteer support needed to build courses under the DH coordinator Peter Appleton's supervision.
- Better quality downhill courses completed in time to practice.
- We are making a commitment to improve the timing equipment and make it more consistent.

X-country Series

- More technical courses to get Ontario riders ready for National and International Competitions.
- More consistency with how sponsors, and teams are treated at the events.
- More consistent start/finish areas, course marking, pre-riding, announcing, course laps, and awards.

From: Pierre Hutsebaut, Director National Programs

To: Women Development Team Athletes

This year again, the Canadian Cycling Association wants to demonstrate its commitment to Women's Cycling Development by offering to 6 women athletes an exciting opportunity.

If you are interested to invest in your own athletic development as a cyclist, your 2002 season might start in Europe.

From Mid-February to Mid-May, the Canadian Cycling Association will run a development camp in Limoux, south of France.

Objectives:

To provide upcoming national team members with European experience starting with an appropriate training base and followed by racing at their appropriate level of abilities in order to develop skills and strategies.

  • To provide national development team athletes without a Trade Team CCA support in their athlete development process.
  • To develop with appropriate monitoring the National B Team

The CCA, with the assistance of Chris Georgas, will provide:
    • Accommodation with cooking and laundry facilities.
    • Registration and Transportation to races.
    • Transportation to training facilities.
    • Registration to a local French club with licenses, jerseys and mechanical support.
    • On site coaching and training programs with testing.
    • Monitoring and reporting on your progress and performances.
    • Access to various training terrain and velodrome (track bikes provided).
    • Opportunities to race at different levels of competition: local, national (Coupe de France Dames), international.

    Athletes obligations:

    • To commit for three months: one for training + 2 for racing. The camp will culminate with the international racing in May: Tour Midi-Pyrenees, May 8-12 and eventually Tour de l'Aude if some athletes are competitive at this level of racing, May 16th to 26th.
    • To follow the program submitted to them at the beginning. This program will be discussed and adapted individually on an ongoing basis. Prior to arrival a good general preparation (GPP) is necessary, the specific preparation will occur in the first month.
    • To be respectful, polite, clean and able to channel their temper into aggressive racing.
    • To support their own airfare to Toulouse.
    • To pay a $ 700 fee upon their arrival to offset some costs occurred for these three months.
    • To have a personal health care insurance. (if not, please call Sean at CCA to discuss what to do).
    • To come with solid equipment in good order: racing and training wheels, bike with new chain, brake pads, cables and bearings, clothing for all weathers, etc. However, the baggage regulation stipulates 2 pieces of maximum 30 kg each, one of these 2 being a bicycle. If you have more than 2 pieces, you will pay excess baggage.

The list of competitions is not completely known because national calendars are not all finalized, however, if you go to www.canadiancycling.ca, under the National Team Program, you will find a tentative schedule of competitions for this project.

    How to participate:

Applications should be sent to the Canadian Cycling Association before January 14th and a selection will be made by January 17th.

Send your letter of intent with your resume to athletes@canadian-cycling.com.

Because of the enthusiasm regarding this years spring development camp, the CCA has decided to extend it's invitation to 6 more athletes. Although these 6 additional athletes would be non-funded, they would benefit from a complete training camp content that includes training expertise, physiological testing, guest speakers, etc.

For all Espoir athletes having not previously been notified the camp will be held in Victoria from March 8th to the 17th 2002.

All Espoir athletes interested in attending this camp are to contact Jacques Landry, National Development Coach, at jlandrycca@aol.com or by phone at (514) 772-3630 before Thursday January 31st.
