Edmonton Interclub Race Series Courtesy Sean Barr
The third race in the first series of the Edmonton Interclub Race Series was a cold and windy event just to the southeast of Edmonton. The temperatures earlier in the day were promising (20 C) but a nasty northwesterly wind developed and by start time was generating an awful chill (7 C) for the volunteers and competitors alike. The overcast conditions and reports of rain had influenced the turnout but it did not discourage the efforts of those who did venture out.
The fastest time over the 17.9 km course was produced by Bruce Copeland (ERTC) on his sleek Cervelo. His time of 24:48 was all the more impressive given the cold wind that was influencing all the riders times. Second fastest was former 1996 National Pursuit Champion Chris Rubuliak (Juventus) with a time of 26:43. The third fastest was Greg Menard (Juventus) with a time of 27:10. It should be noted that both Copeland and Menard are Master B's but show little sign of slowing down based on these efforts.
The C group had the biggest turn out of the evening and of those riders women made up the majority. Nadine Mueller (ERTC) would have taken first place for this group with a time of 32:43 but a surprise performance from Brys Francis (United Cycle) of 28:37 moved her to second. Francis' time was the 5th fastest on the day. B Group next week Brys?
I would like to thank all those who made the effort to attend and compete in this event. I would also like to thank Harley Desprey, Curtis Roper, Shane Rush and Dave Watson for assisting in the timing, marshalling and overall good humour for the event.
