Tour de l'Aude
Report Courtesy Saturn

The awesome and infamous L'Aude wind roared today for the third stage of the 10 day Tour throughout the region of L'Aude. Held on the narrow windy roads between Fleury d'Aude and St Pierre de la Mer, the 116 kilometer race featured one Queen of the Mountain sprint at 65 kilometers.

The race started with a strong head wind and the pace was not very fast, until the first Sprint bonus at the kilometer 37 where 3, 2 and 1 second were given. Yellow Jersey, Saturn's Ina Teutenberg gained 3 seconds for winning the intermediary sprint, and later gained an additional three seconds at the second bonus sprint at the kilometer 57. At this point Teutenberg had a 10 second lead in the overall on second place Zellinskaia.

It was not until the first QOM that a big selection was made with only 50 riders remaining in the front group. There were many attacks into the fierce wind trying to get away from the 50 and race leader Teutenberg, tucked in with her Saturn teammates, Catherine Marsal and Judith Arndt. However, no attack was successful until Marsal attacked on a narrow section of road with 8 kilometers to go. Germany's Hanka Kupfernagel, joined by an Australian rider bridged to her. Marsal allowed the German to pull and then attacked from behind, with only Yolanda Polikavitchute was able to match her power. Marsal stayed away for the win, with Polikavitchute second and Saturn's Teutenberg finishing a very impressive third. Teutenberg's third earned her an additional four seconds time bonuses, which puts her in the lead of the Tour by 14 seconds.

Tomorrow's 114 km take the riders around Rieux Minervois. The wind promises to keep blowing and will continue to pay havoc with the field.
