Giro d'Italia Stage 12

Italian Denis Lunghi (Colpack) won 12th stage, finishing alone 37 seconds ahead of Bert Grabsch (Ger/Phonak). The day was marked by the withdrawal of Gilberto Simoni and Roberto Sgambelluri by request of the race oganizers. German Jens Heppner (Telekom) finished with the main peloton and held on to his overall lead for the seventh day.

The Giro continues to go on under a strange mood, because even though there have not been any new doping cases, the race organization asked Gilberto Simoni (Saeco), 2001 overall and 2002 stage 11 winner along with Roberto Sgambelluri (Mercatone Uno) who were sent home under suspicion of doping.
