Victoria World Cup Update (courtesy the organizers)

20 countries representing five continents will participate in the three-day event at the Juan de Fuca Velodrome in Victoria, B.C., May 28-30, 1998. Track cyclists from Australia to the USA are coming to Victoria to compete at the second stop on the World Cup of Track Cycling series.

Host of the event, the Commonwealth Centre for Sport Development National Cycling Centre, will also be welcoming teams from Canada, Chile, China, Czech Republic, Cuba, Denmark, El Salvador, France, Germany, Great Britain, Lithuania, Malaysia, New Zealand, Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Slovakia and Spain.

„The numbers say it all,‰ said Ken Shields, President of the CCSD. „The commitment we‚ve received from these countries will not only translate into an exciting, world-class competition, but it tells us that Victoria is on track to being internationally recognized as a major cycling centre.‰

Three Canadian athletes have already qualified for the event, the only one of its kind this year in North America. 1996 Olympic silver medallist Brian Walton (Delta, BC). 1994 Commonwealth Games gold medallist and 1993 World Champion Tanya Dubnicoff (Winnipeg) and 1996 National Champion Lori Ann Muenzer (North York, Ont). The remaining Canadian team will be selected at a training camp in Victoria, April 20-26.

While the final names of the riders do not have to be submitted until April 26, 20 countries have registered to compete. Each country is allowed a maximum of nine men and four women on a team.

The prestigious event is being hosted in conjunction with the Greater Victoria Velodrome Association, with assistance from the Victoria International Bicycle Race Society. The Centre is the training headquarters for the Canadian National Cycling Team and hub of a series of national, provincial and community programs. National coach Yury Kashirin is the Head Coach and Director of the Centre.

Comox Cup Road Race #2 set to go Easter Sunday.

The popular Road Race series organised by the Comox Valley Cycle Club will see it's second event of the young season happen on Sunday, April 12. Sign-on starts at 10 AM, with race action getting under way at 11:00. This may be a great opportunity for mountain bikers to get in some extra racing miles after taking in Burnt Bridge on Saturday (and to try to beat up on the roadies...). The Comox Valley (Courtenay, Comox) is only a 2 1/2 hour drive from Victoria. The race will take place on the proven Little River course, with the start on Ryan Road just one kilometer before the entrance to the CFB Comox Airbase. The event usually attracts some of the best racers from the island and sees very competitive riding. All categories of riders are welcome.
