Olivia Gagne is actually a cadet, who has been allowed to race as Junior. She won both Hardwood and Mont Tremblant Canada Cups, skipping Martok because it was "too far away". She will not be going to either Grouse or Kamloops, mainly because of cost (and the fact that as a Cadet she cannot race the Worlds).
Gagne and third place Hupin Demeure rode within sight of each other all race, with Hupin Demeure passing Gagne with "about a kilometre to go. Then she passed me again at 500m."
First place Sabra Davison is from Vermont, and has been following the Norba National circuit with the Devo squad, finishing second at both Wisconsin and West Virginia. She was clearly the class of the field, taking the lead on the first climb and never looking back. "This is a great course, sort of like home. It is the best course I've raced so far."
In the men's 4 lap race it was a battle between Canada Cup leader Frederic Bussieres (Gears Racing) and Max Plaxton, the Canadian who we first met at the Madrid World Cup and who has just moved back to Canada.
Plaxton was strongest on the climbs, but Bussieres had the edge in the singletrack. "I could see that he was strong, but in the technical parts I could pull away." At the start of the third lap, the two were within 10 seconds on the climb, but then Bussieres pulled away to win comfortably.
"This is the first time I've seen courses like this. In Spain it is dry and fast. But I can't make any excuses, he (Bussieres) was the strongest today."
