Stage 5: Easton Town Center Criterium

Laura Van Gilder of Trek/VW won the Easton Town Center Criterium today, the fifth of the six races in the Wendy's International Sports Festival. Canadian Kim Davidge of Saturn Timex finished second. New Zealander Meshy Holt, of Team RONA, finished fifth.

Overall Classification of the Wendy's Sports Festival is determined by adding points earned in each of the races. Overall leader Tina Mayolo-Pic (Diet Rite) finished 10th today, while second-place Nicole Freedman of Team RONA finished 11th. Mayolo-Pic thus increased her lead on Freedman by another point. Entering the last race tomorrow, Mayolo-Pic will lead Freedman by just five points.

Today's race was a 48-km criterium, being 30 laps around a 1.6-km, technical course with a 180-degree hairpin. Two laps into the race, RONA's Gail Longenecker broke away with two other riders. Six laps later, as the trio seemed to be slowing down, Longenecker attacked again and got away. Emily Gloeckner (Veritas) stayed with her. Back in the main field, a group of six girls, which included Laura Van Gilder, Kim Davidge and RONA's Andrea Hannos from Vancouver, chased and bridged to the two leaders. Then RONA's Meshy Holt succeeded in bridging to the lead group.

With 18 laps to go, RONA had three riders in a group of nine which had a 45-second lead on the peloton. The group maintained that lead for several laps. With seven laps to go, Andrea Hannos left the lead group behind her and created a gap. She stayed alone in front for several laps. But the chase group finally reeled her in with a lap and a half to go. Meshy Holt counterattacked immediately. But after a few seconds, turning back to see what sort of a gap she had opened, she found her teammate Longenecker on her wheel, with the rest of the lead group in her wake. It was then left to the very strong Laura Van Gilder to reap the fruits of the situation. She beat Kim Davidge on the line.

Back in the main field, Mayolo-Pic won the mass sprint to finish 10th, just in front of Nicole Freedman.

"We rode a perfect race for 28 laps and a half", said assistant team manager Jim Williams who is managing Team RONA this week in Columbus. But it's no real comfort in a 30-lap race. So with one race left, Nicole (Freedman) has nothing to lose and we'll sur support her for the overall win. I know she can make up that five-point gap."

Sundays's race s the Wendy's International Classic, a 55-km race in Columbus.

Laura Van Gilder de l'équipe Trek/VW a remporté aujourd'hui le Critérium Easton Town Center, la cinquième des six courses qui composent le Festival International des Sports Wendy's. La Canadienne Kim Davidge of Saturn Timex finished second. Meshy Holt, de l'équipe RONA, a fini cinquième.

Le classement général du Festival Wendy's est établi en additionnant les points obtenus dans chacune des épreuves. La meneuse Tina Mayolo-Pic (Diet Rite) a terminé 10ème aujourd'hui et s'est mérité un point de plus que sa plus proche rivale, Nicole Freedman de RONA, qui a fini 11ème aujourd'hui. Au départ de la dernière manche demain, Mayolo-Pic aura une petite avance de cinq points sur Freedman.

L'épreuve d'aujourd'hui était un critérium de 48 kilomètres, soit 30 tours d'un circuit technique de 1,6 km, comportant un virage en épingle. Après deux tours, Gail Longenecker de RONA s'échappa en compagnie d'Émily Gloeckner (Veritas) et d'une autre coureuse. Six tours plus tard, le trio donnant des signes de ralentissement, Longenecker attaqua nouveau. Seule Gloeckner durcit la cadence avec elle. Derrière, la chasse fut organisée par un groupe de six filles, notamment Laura Van Gilder, Kim Davidge et la Vancouveroise Andrea Hannos de RONA. Le groupe rejoignit les deux meneuses. Puis Meshy Holt, seule, réussit < remonter vers le groupe de tête.

Avec 18 tours à faire, RONA avait trios représentantes dans une échappée de neuf qui menait le peloton par 45 secondes. Le groupe maintint cette avance pendant plusieurs tours. À sept tours de la fin, Andrea Hannos réussit à s'échapper du groupe de tête et à créer l'écart. Elle resta ainsi, seule devant, pendant plusieurs tours. Le groupe de chasse l'absorba avec un tour et demi à faire. Meshy Holt contre-attaqua vite et fort. Mais après quelques secondes, elle se retourna pour évaluer les dommages et vit sa coéquipière sur sa roue, avec tout le groupe de chasse dans son sillage. La très forte Laura Van Gilder n'eut ensuite qu'à tirer les marrons du feu. Elle coiffa Kim Davidge sur la ligne d'arrivée.

Dans le peloton derrière, Mayolo-Pic emporta le sprint massif pour finir 10ème, tout juste devant Nicole Freedman.

"Nous avons fait une course parfaite pendant 28 tours et demi, commentait en fin de couse Jim Williams, assistant directeur sportif qui dirige l'Équipe RONA au Festival Wendy's. Mais ce n'est pas une consolation dans une course de 30 tours. Avec une course à faire, Nicole (Freedman) n'a rien à perdre et nous l'appuierons sans réserve pour qu'elle gagne au classement général. Je sais qu'elle peut combler un déficit de cinq points."

La course de demain est la Wendy's International Classic, une course de 55 kilomètres disputée à Columbus.
