Court Rejects Appeal by Garzelli Over Doping Ban

Associated Press is reporting that the Court of Arbitration for Sports upheld the ban imposed by the Swiss Olympic Association on Stefano Garzelli. Garzelli (who is Italian, but races with a Swiss licence) tested positive for Probenecid, a banned diuretic, after the second stage of this year's Giro d'Italia in Liege, Belgium. He was suspended from the race a week later after a second test confirmed the result.

Part of the ban was suspended, allowing Garzelli to start racing again in April 2003. A 50,000 Swiss franc (Can $53,000) fine will also be suspended, provided the rider does not commit another doping offense within five years.
