Pan American Championships Quito, Ecuador

The CC forwarded this report from Travis Smith

Monday August 19

Keirin:
Steen Madsen placed 3rd in a very fast and aggressive (scary) race.

Lori-Ann Muenzer, placed 1st in a very well ridden race on her behalf.

Alexandre Cloutier was knocked out in the first round and then also in the repechage.

Tuesday August 20

500m: Lori-Ann Muenzer placed 2nd with a time of 35.0 what was a Canadian record I belive.

1000m: Jim Fisher rode a 1:04.4 on Marc Ernsting's bike.

Travis Smith rode a 1:06.0 - a personal best and placed me 9th and Jim Fisher was 5th

This Kilo that I rode today was so hard both Jim and I were sick afterward...all because of the altitude.

200m: Lori-Ann Muenzer did a 11.0 and is placed 1st

Olympic Sprint ..(Alex Cloutier,Steen Madsen & Travis Smith) rode a 1:02.9 and placed 5th . I just didn't have it at the end of the race. My head from the altitude felt like it was going to pop off my neck.

Other results: Mark Ernsting won a bronze in the Individual Pursuit on Monday and Cory Lange finished 8th in the U23 TT on Sunday.

Bonham & Co. To Remain In Cycling

The financial sections of today's newspapers have all run stories on Mark Bonham and Bonham & Co., regarding the $200,000 fine and 3 year trading ban imposed by the Ontario Securities Commission over Mr. Bonham and Bonham and Co. Inc.'s failure to adequately maintain records on manually priced securities when such was required. Bonham and his company are long time supporters of cycling in Canada, both through the Gearsracing.com team and rider development program, and their title sponsorship of the Ontario Cup offroad series, Ontario race events, sponsorship of the Hardwood Hills Sprockids Ontario program and the Gears 24 Hour Spin Event (over $1,000,000 raised for cancer and AIDS research and care in 3 years).

The settlement related to the manual pricing of securities over the 11 month period from July 31, 1997 to June 30, 1998. The Ontario Securities Commission determined that inadequate records existed in the determination of security prices for those securities with no price included the external price feed. The resulting pricing over-valued three of the companies mutual funds. The OSC emphasized that this case involved no malfeaseance on the part of Mark Bonham and there were no material gains by Mr. Bonham or Bonham & Co. Inc. relating to this issue.

The Globe and Mail reports:

In comments after the hearing, Mr. Bonham and his lawyer, Nairn Waterman of Lang Michener, insisted that Mr. Bonham had no ulterior motive when he manually priced stocks at the end of the trading day.

"I, in no way, benefited from any of these issues," Mr. Bonham said. "It was a matter of not maintaining adequate records where a computer could not provide a price. We were not adequately diligent."

In addition to the fine, Mr Bonham has agreed that he will not serve as a director or officer of any registrant for 3 years, and that he will not price mutual funds during that period.

We contacted Mr. Bonham by e-mail to find out whether there would be any effect to his involvement in cycling, and received the following response:

"This has no impact at all on the involvement of Mark Bonham or Bonham & Co. in the cycling community."

Kevin Wallace of Gears Racing also assured us that "Mark contacted the team and said that his involvement would continue, and that there would be no effect on sponsorship."

Espoir Road World's Pool Selected
Courtesy CCA

Following this past Road National Championships, the Canadian Cycling Association has named a pool of Espoir athletes that will partake in pre-worlds preparation in Europe. The riders named to the pool are the following:

Ian Condron
Martin Gilbert
Ryder Hesjedal
Cory Lange
Jean-François Laroche
Wannes Maartens
François Parisien
Dominique Rollin
Martin St-Laurent

It is to be noted that this pool of athletes has been selected based on results at National Championships, international results over the season and based on the potential to do well at the World Championships in Zolder, Belgium.

However, following the preparation races in Europe, the final team for worlds will be decided based on the aptitude to be competitive on the international level. The ability to show competitiveness throughout the selected European races will be the basis for final selection. Even though there is a participation quota of 3 road entrants and 2 ITT entrants dictated to the CCA by the UCI, there is nothing that obliges the CCA to fill the quota.

This being said, the decision has been made to work towards a selection of athletes capable of partaking in the individual time trial at worlds on top of having a team in the road race. The athletes selected to ride the ITT may or may not be named to the road team. Once again, the final selection will be based on competitiveness in prior to international preparation races.

As per the ITT at worlds, one race has been selected to choose the second rider participating in the aforementioned event. Since the winner of nationals ITT is named to the start list at the ITT world championships the two runners up at nationals will race in the GP des Nations individual time trial for the one spot that is left.

The preparation races are the following:

Sunday September 15th La Flèche Namuroise (1.7.2) BEL
Wednesday September 18th Adinkerke Espoir race BEL
Saturday September 21st GP des Nations ITT (1.7.1) (Laroche/Parisien) FRA
Sunday September 22nd Harelbeke BEL
Monday September 23rd Lichtervelde BEL
Friday to Sunday September 29th Tour de Seine et Marne (2.6) FRA Thursday October 3rd Tielt BEL
Sunday October 6th Paris-Tours Espoir (1.7.1) FRA

As for the road team, a maximum of 3 starters for the final selection will be made based on performances in the Tour de Seine et Marne and Paris-Tours Espoir.

The CCA is pleased to be in a position to prepare a group of 9 riders from which the best will emerge. This encouraging situation is a result of a good junior program in the past 3 years and gives the CCA a positive indication for the future of road cycling in Canada. The CCA is committed to continue its support in the development of new athletes every year and will keep offering to this existing pool of athletes a comprehensive program in 2003 and 2004.

In closing, the aforementioned racing program has been developed to optimize the pool of athlete's preparation for worlds. The chosen races will simulate the key performance factors needed for competitiveness at worlds in Zolder. In this spirit, the CCA hopes that the selected athletes will achieve a top 20 country result at worlds in order to be able to register 5 starters on the line in Hamilton in 2003.

Hamilton Cycling Club's Tuesday Evening Criterium
by Rob Cheskey

August 20th, 2002

The final evening of our series for 2002 saw fine weather with a light S.E. wind. 46 racers participated including two 14-year-old boys, ZACK MORRIS and MARK HINNEN, who put in some time riding in the pack. The pace was fast from the start, and despite lulls later in the race, a record time of 56:20 was recorded for the 40k (35 laps).

New series rider ANDREW PINFOLD captured the first prime for $5.00. A couple of breaks formed after this but these were reeled in. With about 15 laps remaining a threesome of ANDREW, PAT SHEA and PAUL HORNAK broke clear and developed a break which gained 15 seconds on the pack. PAUL HORNAK took the points prime at 12 laps to go. This vaulted him into 2nd place overall in the series, over JEFF SHARAFBAYANI.

Halton Road and Trail led a serious-looking chase which reduced the gap to under 10 seconds but this fizzled out and the threesome hung on, with PAT SHEA getting the victory, followed by ANDREW then PAUL. The fast-charging pack were only a second or two back at the end and PIERS DAVIDGE won the pack sprint for 4th place, followed by PAUL REGO in 5th.

PIERS had the series championship won last week but did not rest on his laurels, racing hard to take the bunch sprint. Congratulations PIERS and thanks to all the racers for a great season of racing. Thanks also to all who marshaled the corner, and thanks especially to my wife SANDY CHESKEY who organized the event each week, turned the lap cards, rang the bell and mostly kept smiling even while complying with all the paperwork which is now required of clubs such as ours who host these activities.

Note from Sandy: Next Tuesday, August 27th, same time, same place, will be the Awards Presentation. We'll have some sort of fun ride followed by awards, draw prizes, pizza and drinks! Hope to see you all there!

Overall Standings

1st Piers Davidge 58 points
2nd Paul Hornak 44 points
3rd Jeff Sharafbayani 39 points
4th Jay MacLaren 35 points
5th Mirek Mazur 30 points
