Andrew Randell Announces Retirement

January 16, 2003 - Claremont, CA - In a surprise turn of events, Canadian National Road Race Champion Andrew Randell has decided to hang up his wheels rather than accept his position on the Schroeder Iron Pro Cycling Team.

Says Randell: "For the past 7 years I have been on the road for 6-7 months each year, starting with training in California and moving through the season. This is the life of a professional cyclist and I am no longer able to live in this manner. I have built a life in Toronto and will have to find a way to bring my interests here, rather than sacrificing them, in line with my love of cycling."

"On my recent trip to San Diego I realised that there was a big difference between my excitement for the coming season and that of my Schroeder Iron teammates. I am going to look for a better balance in my life. I have enrolled at University and will begin working towards an Urban Planning degree."

"I want to thank Frank for the opportunity he offered me and wish the team all the best in the upcoming season, it's too bad it didn't work out as expected."

Frank Schroeder was surprised by Andrew's decision, but with the strength of the Schroeder Iron team, he is optimistic, and looks forward to a year of successes despite the loss of a valuable rider.

"I am shocked," says Schroeder, "but understand his position. I'm glad this came up before we started our season, and thus it will have no effect on the team."

"We are leaving his position open right now, but have been talking to some very high profile riders and expect an addition to the squad by mid February. Andrew's retirement has opened the door for another rider to come on board and be part of our successful season."
