Armstrong and Wife "Experience Difficulty" in Marriage

The Austin, Texas newspaper (Austin American Statesman) has reported that Armstrong will begin his campaign in Europe for a record-tying fifth Tour win without his wife and children accompanying him. The couple separated in late January. The statement from the newspaper is:

"We are working through these sensitive issues in the same way we have met other challenges in our life -- together with determination and dedication. We may experience a period of time apart from each other as we reflect on our relationship and work to preserve and protect the interests of our family and children."

Sneddon Joins Kona/Clarks

KonaWorld (Feb. 21, 2003) - The Kona Clarks Factory Team today announced that they have signed emerging U-23 American cyclo-cross and mountain bike racing star, Barry Wicks and up-and-coming Canadian mountain bike racer Kris Snedden to the Kona Clarks team roster for the 2003-2004 racing season.

Already a veteran of Kona's cyclo-cross teams, Wicks will join the Kona Clarks Factory Team on a full-time basis and will be competing in mountain bike and cyclo-cross races for the team.

Last year, Wicks was the 2nd American at the World Championships in Kaprun, Austria; was the 1st U-23 N. American at cyclo-cross World Championships in Monopoli, Italy; took the silver medal in U-23 US Cyclo-cross Nationals and placed 10th the next day in the Elite Men's race.

Kona Clarks Team Manager, Russ Carty said Wicks is ready to make a move on the mountain bike side this year. "Barry raced with the Pro-Elite men in mountain bike races last year with some good results. He has tons of potential, is highly motivated and has applied for funding and housing from the US Olympic Training Center for this year."

Kris Snedden is 21-years-old and is from Sechelt, B.C. In 2000 Kris was the Junior Expert Canadian National Champ. Kris currently is living in Victoria and is training with Kona/Clarks teammate Geoff Kabush. Kris's results improve every year, said Russ Carty. "He is definitely one of the Canadian up and comers and will be one to watch in the upcoming season."

Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crews Return for Seventh Year

The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crews are back on the trail and focused on their most ambitious schedule of trailbuilding events since the program began in 1997.

Two teams of IMBA trail experts will lead more than 70 events this year in 36 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces. Their tour is highlighted by 68 two-day IMBA Trailbuilding Schools.

Sponsored by Subaru of America and directed by the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA), the Trail Care Crews work with bike clubs, land managers, and other trail groups to build and improve trails, solve trail management challenges, and teach the art of sustainable trailbuilding.

Returning for another coast-to-coast tour in their eye-catching, IMBA-decaled 2003 Subaru Outbacks are the successful teams of Mark Schmidt & Lora Woolner and Scott Linnenburger & Aaryn Kay. The Crews have helped build trails in all 50 states and a dozen other countries.

"Thanks to Subaru of America's support, IMBA's Trail Care Crews will continue to work their magic to improve trail access for mountain bikers," said IMBA executive director Tim Blumenthal.

Trailbuilding Schools are generally hosted by an IMBA-affiliated club, and blend interactive learning, hands-on trailwork and top-notch instructors to develop skilled trailworkers and crew leaders.

Race Face Announces Riders for UFC II

Race Face Performance Products is proud to announce the selection process for the second annual Ultimate Freeride Challenge has been completed. Last year's contest was a resounding success with the eventual winner being Tyler "Super T" Klassen. Klassen went onto fame and fortune in 2002 by winning the Red Bull Rampage in Utah, and starring in several high-profile mountain bike films.

Through this process, a panel of judges narrowed the entries down to 16 videos which will begin to go online Friday, February 28th. Over the next six weeks Race Face's online community will vote for their favourite videos and the winners will advance for a chance to win a sponsorship contract worth over US$10,000!

Based on fan club feedback to the first contest, several changes were made to this year's UFC. Most noticeably, all footage had to be original. Footage from previous or soon to be released films were not allowed. This limited the number of semi-pro submissions and the result was a field of sixteen amateurs, competing for some big cash.

"We're really stoked with the submissions we received and now it's up to our on-line community to decide who is going to take home the title and the cash" says Race Face's Marshall Rutman. "We've got a lot of young talented riders in the field. In fact, the average age of our competitors is only 19 years old. The riders represent two provinces, three states and we've got a competitor from Australia as well. I can't wait to see our fan club's reaction to the videos."

Riders have been placed randomly in four groups of four with the first round of voting beginning Friday, February 28th.
