LOOK WHO'S COMING OUT OF THE WOODWORK

The Midweek Club's sixth race of the season, a 50 km handicap criterium with the scratch group giving 2.5 minutes to the rest of the field, was won by last year's overall winner, Heath Cockburn from Rick Froner (ind.) and Chris Atkins (ind.)

The strong northerly wind seemed to be a deterrent to serious racing for the first few laps and the scratch group made hardly any impression on the much larger handicap bunch. However, the fifth lap saw both groups speed up and split with many riders dropping from each group in "the line of death". The scratchers whittled away the others' lead and, by the thirteenth lap, all were together. After this, there were a number of attempts to break away but all were hauled back in short order and by the final lap the bunch was back together.

At the line the lead trio were followed in by Woodbridge Italia's Brent Arthurs and Piers Davidge, Mississauga. Sixth was Neworld's Jeff Hansen. Many of the sizable collection of spectators noticed ex National team member Eon D'Ornellas cruising comfortably halfway down the bunch, Junior ace from the eighties, Jean-Paul Tesolin on a team issue Cannondale and the aforementioned Rick Froner who raced with some success a number of years ago.

Thanks to Doug Pogue for helping with registering the record field of over 70 riders and to Mike and Clare Barry and Jeff Archbold for collecting cones.
