Giro d'Italia

Robbie McEwen (Lotto-Domo) won the stage, but lost it after he drifted towards the barricades in the sprint, shutting out Fabio Baldato (Alessio). McEwen was relegated to last place in the peloton, with Baldato being given the win. Alessandro Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo) finished fifth (upgraded to fourth after McEwen's relegation) and remains in the overall lead with Baldato second. Mario Cipollini (Domina Vacanze) was never in contention, after losing contact with the peloton on some climbs with 20 kilometres to go, and finishing over a minute down.
