June 21/97 19:14 pm - Pezzo Again, Euro Results

Pezzo Again Paolo Pezzo (Gary Fisher) was once again victorious in the Grundig World Cup, showing that the layoff from the series did not slow her down. The Italian Olympic Champion took her fourth World Cup of the year, ahead of Alison Sydor (Volvo-Cannondale), the defending World Cup champion, by a whopping four and a half minute margin. The feared rain did not appear, but that did not help Sydor or third place finisher Ruthie Matthes (Powerbar), as Pezzo rode away from them on the first climb of the 9 kilometre circuit (the women rode three laps). Sydor and Matthes fought it out for nearly 16 kilometres, before the Canadian world champion pulled away on the main climb of the course, to beat the U.S. rider by a minute. Just to show how dominant Pezzo was - 4th place (Beth Coates of Ventana) was over 12 minutes behind first! We will provide results of the top ten (and all Canadians) later tonight. Remember, the Alison Sydor Chat Room happens at our World Cup site (www.mtbworlds.com) next Friday (June 27th) between 8:00 and 9:00 pm EST. This is your chance to chat live with the 3-time World Champion. So be there, and tell your friends! Tour of Switzerland Stage 5, 31.5 km ITT 1. Sergei Gontchar (Ukraine) 39:30 2.
