Roy Leaves Rona . . . Officially

As reported some time ago, Émilie Roy has left Team Rona. Roy announced she was leaving the team earlier in the spring (see Daily News March 18/04 8:30 pm EST - Roy Leaves Rona). Now, the team director André Aubut, has officially released her, so that she can ride for other squads. The text of the official release is below.

Montreal, Quebec, May 14, 2004 - Émilie Roy is no longer part of Team RONA. The young cyclist from Saint-Cuthbert, Quebec, and the team's directeur sportif, André Aubut, have agreed that her athletic development would be better served in another context.

"I learned a lot from my experience with the team," Émilie Roy explained, "but for the moment I prefer to pursue my career elsewhere."

"I wish Émilie all the success she deserves in her career," added Aubut. "She is a talented young cyclist, and I'm sure the world will be hearing more from her in the years to come."


Cipollini Out

Mario Cipollini (Domina Vancze) has pulled out of the Giro d'Italia. Cipollini crashed heavily at the end of stage 4, when he touched wheels with his leadout man Andrus Aug. He injured his ankle, and has been struggling at the back of the peloton.


Tour de l'Aude

The results from yesterday's first stage (posted earlier) seemed rather confusing, with times all mixed up. The reason, it turns out, is that there was a lcrash involving a number of riders with less than a kilometre to go. All of the affect riders where given the time of the group they were with, but the positions when they finally crossed the line. General classification (not available earlier), is posted below:

Lyne Bessette chute dans le sprint final

Montréal, 14 mai 2004 (Sportcom) - Une chute impliquant plusieurs cyclistes a marqué la première étape (95 kilomètres) du Tour de l'Aude, vendredi, à Gruissan (France). L'accident, dans lequel Lyne Bessette a été impliquée, s'est produit alors qu'il ne restait qu'environ 300 mètres avant l'arrivée. La porte-couleurs de l'équipe canadienne s'en est tirée avec un casque fendu, quelques égratignures et un mal de tête. Cela ne devrait cependant pas l'empêcher de remonter en selle pour l'étape de samedi.

L'Australienne Alison Wright (Nobili Rubinetterie-Guerciotti) a mérité la victoire. Le classement de Bessette n'était pas disponible au moment d'écrire ces lignes, mais étant donné que la chute s'est produite dans le dernier kilomètre de l'épreuve, la Québécoise a été créditée du même temps que la gagnante.

" J'étais là, tout comme Petra Rossner (Nürnberger Versicherung) et Magali LeFloc'h (équipe nationale de France) ", a expliqué Bessette, deuxième du Tour l'an dernier. " Nous étions toutes des filles qui pouvaient remporter l'étape. J'ai subi une chute assez solide et j'ai cassé mon casque. Le reste semble correct. Je ne me sens toutefois pas super bien et les médecins vont venir me voir tantôt. J'ai le genou un peu amoché, mais je sens que je vais être plus courbaturée qu'autre chose. Du moins, je l'espère ! "

Avant l'incident, la championne canadienne au contre-la-montre a fait partie d'une échappée qui a pris naissance à la mi-course, mais le vent a fini par refroidir les ardeurs des fugitives.

" C'était un parcours assez plat, mais il y avait énormément de vent. C'était donc important de rester dans les coups, car des vents de côté peuvent favoriser des échappées alors tu ne veux pas être prise derrière. Ensuite, j'ai tenté de faire la bordure puisqu'il y avait un vent de côté, mais il y avait des filles qui chassaient et elles sont revenues sur nous. "
